Division 1 1984/85

The Division 1 1985/86 was the 48th professional French football league. Paris Saint-Germain became champions for the first time in its relatively short club history .

The first match day was July 16, 1985, the last match day was on April 25, 1986. The “winter break” had been shortened so that the French national team could prepare extensively for the finals of the World Cup in Mexico , and therefore only lasted December 22 until January 10th.

societies

The clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 17th were eligible to participate, as well as two direct promoters from the second division and the winner of the relegation round . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:

Season course

The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference and - as between Brest and Sochaux - possibly the higher number of hits made the decisive factors for the placement.

Three clubs dominated the first half of the season, namely - in that order - Paris, Nantes and Bordeaux. The first two teams mentioned had to cope with a considerable change in their squad, which in the case of Paris had been made through considerable investments in the transfer market and at Nantes, as usual, from their own youth center. PSG in particular had a brilliant start to the season, remained unbeaten in the first 26 games and surrendered one point in only eight games. Mainly thanks to the new Bats , Fernández and crowd favorite Sušić as well as the experienced striker Rocheteau (with Saint-Étienne already three times champion) the capital city club was characterized by a "lively, spectacular style of play". After the winter break, PSG lost some of their concentration, losing one after the other in Lille and Nancy, but the two pursuers could not benefit significantly from that. Nantes also lost too many points, for example against Laval and Marseille, and the defending champion from Bordeaux finally gave up the championship after the 9-0 "slap" in Monaco at the beginning of the year and concentrated - which was crowned with success - exclusively on the Cup competition . Paris defended its six-point lead over Nantes until the end of three of its six-point lead over Nantes, and the French capital was able to celebrate a championship title in football for the first time in exactly 50 years , thanks to the Racing Club . Coach Houllier then said with understatement : “In Paris, where public pressure is greater than elsewhere, you have to play successfully and beautifully at the same time. I think we succeeded. "

At the bottom of the table, the crucial questions were only clarified on the 38th and final matchday; up to this point there was still a risk of direct relegation or at least participation in the relegation round for eight teams. In the final ranking the table-9 separated. and the 19th only six points. The SEC alone Bastia was able to plan early and after almost two decades of continuous membership in the top division for Division 2 ; responsible for this was a massive deficit in the club's budget, which, among other things, had made it necessary to sell the two most successful strikers during the transfer period in winter. Racing Paris and AS Saint-Étienne were promoted for the following season . Nancy prevailed against FC Mulhouse in the ensuing barrages and thus secured relegation. The first division set a new record for statistics with AS Monaco, which ended exactly half of its point games (19) with a tie; the previous high was held by Lille OSC, which had 18 draws in 1978/79 .

For journalists Jean-Philippe Rethacker and Jacques Thibert, this season was also the "Year of the Africans" because with the Senegalese Jules Bocandé from Metz and the Congo- born Eugène Kabongo from Racing Paris, both top scorers in the professional leagues of France from the "Black Continent" came and with the 34-year-old Roger Milla a Cameroonian was largely responsible for the resurgence of the "Greens" from Saint-Étienne.
