National team

During his time at AJ Auxerre, Bats was appointed to the French national football team for the first time in 1983 ; he had previously played in the youth national teams. His first appearances in friendly matches enabled him to take part in the 1984 European Championship in France. Bats was a regular goalkeeper, played every game and won the title together with his teammate Jean-Marc Ferreri . In 1985, winning the Artemio Franchi Cup followed a game between European champions France and Copa America winners Uruguay. Bats also played at the 1986 World Cup , where he finished third with France. He drew particular attention when he saved a Zico penalty in the second half of the quarter-finals against Brazil and two penalties from Sócrates and Júlio César in the subsequent penalty shoot-out . In the semi-final against Germany, however, Bats made a fatal mistake: Andreas Brehme had shot a free kick flat on the French goal in the 9th minute and the ball slipped through under Bats. France could not catch up with this lead and missed the final. The qualification for the European Championship in Germany in 1988 was a disaster. The European champion won only once in eight games and missed participation in the tournament as third in the table behind the Soviet Union and the GDR .

Bats played in the national team from September 1983 to November 1989 and made 50 appearances during this time (17 of them during his time with Auxerre, 33 with Paris Saint-Germain).

Trainer

Joël Bats came after his active career to the coaching staff in Paris, where he was first assistant to Artur Jorge and later to Luis Fernández . In 1996 he became a trainer. His assistant was another former Parisian player, Ricardo . In their first season under Bats, PSG finished second in the French division and reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup . At the end of a disappointing 1997/98 season, the duo Bats-Ricardo was released. Bats was a coach at LB Châteauroux in the second division, but where he had to leave after only one season. In 2000, Bats became goalkeeping coach at the French champions Olympique Lyon under the direction of Jacques Santini . Despite the coaching change in Lyon, Bats kept this post, which he held after Santini under Paul Le Guen and under Gérard Houllier. In November 2017 he announced his departure after 17 years as goalkeeping coach at OL and in December 2017 he switched to the Canadian MLS club Montreal Impact , where he will also work as a goalkeeping coach.
