  • 1880 : The Chimborazo , with 6,310 m one of the highest peaks in the Andes , is climbed for the first time by the British mountaineer Edward Whymper .
  • 1967 : The athlete Donald Campbell tries to set a water speed record on the British lake Coniston Water . His racing boat overturns and Campbell is killed.
  • 2008 : The Dakar Rally does not take place for the first time in its 30-year history. The organizer is canceling the competition due to an urgent travel warning from the French government. In addition to the murder of four French tourists on December 24, 2007 and a fatal attack on three soldiers on the border with Algeria, there was also a terrorist threat against the rally itself.
