Harmony Korine (born January 4, 1973 in Bolinas , California ) is an American film director and writer. He attracted attention in 1995 with his screenplay for Kids , which was filmed by photographer Larry Clark . The film follows a group of New York teenagers growing up in the era of AIDS.

Life

According to Kids, Korine directed Gummo in 1997 , which is about the small town Xenia , Ohio , badly devastated by a tornado. The film bypasses conventional narrative narration and shows unusual and disturbing images like a ham stuck to the wall or two pigeons fighting. Korine herself is briefly seen as a shy, gay teenager. His girlfriend at the time, Chloë Sevigny (who made her film debut in Kids) was the best-known actress in the film, in which mostly lay people played. Although New York Times critic Janet Maslin called Gummo "the worst movie of the year," it earned Korine praise from recognized filmmakers such as Gus Van Sant and Werner Herzog .

In 1998 Korine made the 40-minute short film The Diary of Anne Frank Part II , a collage projected onto three surfaces. Among other things, the film shows a boy burying his dog, children in satanic clothes tearing up the Bible and throwing themselves up on it, and a man in black and white minstrel make-up singing "My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean", and more dances.

In 1999 Julien Donkey-Boy appeared ; In this film, he adhered to the rules of the Dogma 95 movement, so he avoided complex camera tricks, artificial light and large sets. The plot is told from the perspective of a schizophrenic boy (played by Ewen Bremner) who tries to understand the crazy world around him. Julien's father was played by the German director Werner Herzog .

Korine originally wanted to implement the Fight Harm project after Gummo . Described as a comedy show, Fight Harm included footage of Korine trying to incite strangers into a fight on the street. When filming these fights, Korine followed a series of rules: the other person had to be bigger and stronger than him, the opponent had to strike first, and a fight could not be abandoned unless Korine was in mortal danger. After seven fights filmed and various injuries, Korine only had 15 minutes of usable material in the can and then abandoned the project.

In 2002 Larry Clark made the film Ken Park , based on an older screenplay by Korine. The story of various young people and their problems has been banned in Australia. When the film was released, Korine had been out of contact with Clark in a long time; he also did not take part in the film production.

Korine wrote the lyrics for Björk's song “Harm of Will”, which can be heard on her album Vespertine (2001); He is also the author of the book Wish List of a Bastard , a collection of black humor notes, rumors and other fragments such as part of an old interview with Johnny Depp .

In the past few years Korine has directed short films and music videos ( Sonic Youths “Sunday”). In 2003 he made the documentary Above The Below about his friend David Blaine and his 44-day stay in a Plexiglas box over Tower Bridge in London . The film also includes jokes, visual poetry, and music.

Korine's third feature film, Mister Lonely , premiered at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival . Among others, Diego Luna , Samantha Morton , Denis Lavant , Anita Pallenberg and again Werner Herzog starred. He wrote the script together with his brother Avi Korine .

In 2012 he was awarded for his feature film Spring Breakers with James Franco , Selena Gomez , Vanessa Hudgens , Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine starring his first invitation to the competition of the Film Festival of Venice .
