Denis Lavant (born June 17, 1961 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) is a French actor .

Life

Denis Lavant gained first experience in street theater and then took acting lessons from Jacques Lassalle .

He played his first role in the 1982 television film L'ombre sur la plage . In the same year he stood in front of the camera for Robert Hossein's film version of Die Elenden . He then appeared in various supporting roles, including in Claude Lelouch's film Viva la vie! with Charlotte Rampling . In 1984, while working on Boy Meets Girl, he first met director Leos Carax , in whose two subsequent films Lavant also starred. The shooting of the third joint production, Die Liebenden von Pont-Neuf, stretched over four years and put a strain on the relationship between the two artists. The film, in which Juliette Binoche also took part, was released in 1991 and brought Denis Lavant a nomination for the European Film Award for best actor .

The actor was also some short films before the camera and played in international productions such as 1996 in the South Korean film Wild Animals by Kim Ki-duk . For Claire Denis , Lavant took on a leading role in the critically acclaimed film The Foreign Legionnaire in 1999 . In the same year the actor starred again in Veit Helmer's film Tuvalu and received the award for best actor at the Festival de Cine Español de Málaga for his performance .

In the horror film Deep in the Woods by Lionel Delplanque , Denis Lavant stood in front of the camera with François Berléand and Michel Muller . In 2004, the actor played a small role in the French-American co-production Mathilde - A great love with Audrey Tautou , Marion Cotillard and Jodie Foster . In 2015 he played Jacques Austerlitz in the documentary "Austerlitz" by Stan Neumann based on the book Austerlitz by WG Sebald .
