occupation

3 Days in Quiberon is a black and white film directed by Emily Atef from 2018 . The film is inspired by real events in the life of actress Romy Schneider (played by Marie Bäumer ). In 1981 Schneider spends three days with her best friend Hilde ( Birgit Minichmayr ) in the small French spa town of Quiberon in Brittany to relax. At the same time, despite her negative experiences with the German press, she arranged an interview with Michael Jürgs ( Robert Gwisdek ), reporter for Stern magazine , and the photographer Robert Lebeck ( Charly Hübner ). The interview and the accompanying photos stretch over three days and develop into a portrait of Romy Schneider in the tension between the private and the public.

The premiere of the German - Austrian - French co-production took place as part of the 68th Berlin International Film Festival on February 19, 2018, where the film was invited to the competition for the Golden Bear . The film opened in Germany on April 12, 2018 and in Austria on April 13, 2018.

action

Quiberon ( Brittany ), in 1981: The actress Romy Schneider is detoxing in a spa hotel by the sea. She lets her childhood friend Hilde Fritsch, who works as a restorer in Vienna, follow . Schneider entrusts her to make the "diet" for her 14-year-old son David, who would rather live with the stepfamily. She therefore suffers from great fear of loss. The friends take a bath together in Schneider's hotel room. Fritsch is supposed to support Schneider at a press conference. Despite her negative experiences with the German press, she agreed to an interview with Michael Jürgs , reporter for Stern magazine , and the photographer Robert “Bob” Lebeck . They meet at the hotel bar. Schneider has a close, friendly relationship with Lebeck, whom she affectionately calls “Lebo” / “le beau” (Eng. “The beautiful”), while the photographer affectionately dubbed her “la belle” (“the beautiful”). Juergs, however, doesn't know her yet. The interview, which begins in Schneider's hotel room, is intended to show the difference between the actress and the private person. It will take a total of three days. In Fritsch's presence, Jürgs asks u. a. after Schneider's relationship with his mother, her move to France and the suicide of her first husband Harry Meyen . When asked about her first husband, Schneider has to break off the interview. In the evening, the four of them drink champagne together in a restaurant on the harbor, which is actually closed for a wedding party, contrary to Schneider's spa doctor's advice, and Lebeck takes pictures. Schneider announces plans for a new film, The Walker of Sans-Souci . She has fun with a poetically inclined participant ( Denis Lavant ) of the wedding party, who has meanwhile sat down with them. Jürgs points out to Schneider that the interview would give her the chance to “put things right” in the public eye. At Fritsch's insistence, who doesn't trust the two journalists, the heavily drunk tailor leaves the restaurant with her. She doesn't want to go to her hotel room alone and asks Fritsch to come along. She tries to call David, but is held back by Fritsch. Schneider did not even endure her withdrawal for four days. Fritsch has to stop her from taking pills.

The next morning Schneider takes a relaxed walk with Lebeck. Then the interview is continued by Jürgs, the white wine is ordered and she u. a. asked about her lost fortune and absent father. Schneider admits that he is broke and that he has never learned how to handle money. She hopes to take a break after her next film. Fritsch wants her to break off the interview because she perceives Juergs to be manipulative and "overreaching", but remains unsuccessful. The two journalists later quarrel. Jürgs accuses Lebeck of being in love with Schneider. Fritsch plans to leave. When David calls, Schneider lets Fritsch take the phone call. When Fritsch wants to have dinner alone in a posh restaurant, Jürgs sits down at her table against her will. He accuses her of wanting to compensate for her mediocre looks and lack of talent by playing as Romy Schneider's close friend. In return, Fritsch accuses the journalist, who previously wanted to write about political topics, of merely wanting to increase the number of copies of the Stern through his reports on stars and celebrities . When Fritsch wanted to inquire about Schneider's condition by phone, she didn't answer the phone. Fritsch, Jürgs and Lebeck find Schneider dazed in bed, where she has taken a sleeping pill. Lebeck then stayed with Schneider. A private photo session develops from this. Lebeck tries to calm Schneider's guilty conscience about not spending enough time with her children. He lies down in bed with her, they exchange tenderness and both sleep in this posture after Schneider asked him to hug her tightly.

The next morning Lebeck wakes up alone in the hotel room, Schneider has disappeared. Fritsch, Lebeck and Jürgs find her sitting on a rock on the beach, where she looks melancholy at the sea. Schneider spontaneously suggests a photo session on the rocks and apologizes to Fritsch. She accepts the apology. However, Schneider falls and breaks his ankle during the recordings. There is a problem with her producer about the upcoming filming. Jürgs gets a guilty conscience because of Schneider's revealing interview. However, Schneider trusts him and leaves. Jürgs and Lebeck also leave together, while Fritsch remains in Quiberon.

A week later, Lebeck visits Schneider and her daughter Sarah at their home in Paris. The relaxed tailor indirectly indicates to Lebeck that she intentionally fell while taking photos on the beach in order to be able to spend time with her children. She reads Jürgs' interview, which her Lebeck brought with her, and writes the sentence “I will go on living, and really well!” On the last page. Lebeck tells her that she is the most beautiful and always will be.

The filming took place from November 2016 to January 2017 in France and Germany. The filming locations were original locations in Brittany and Hamburg as well as on the Baltic Sea island of Fehmarn , where the listed Haus des Gastes was transformed into a hotel for the film.

Marie Bäumer had already received several offers to play the film legend because of a certain external resemblance to Romy Schneider. However, she declined because she was not interested in a film biography with a look at all the stations in life. 3 days in Quiberon , however, according to Bäumer, creates a zoom at the end of Schneider's life, "which means condensation, takes on a representative moment". The French film producer Denis Poncet had the idea to use the weekend in Quiberon as this vicarious moment.

The production was supported by the Austrian Film Institute , the Film Fund Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein , the German Federal Film Board , the German Federal Film Fund , the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media , Eurimages , MEDIA and the region Bretagne . The Austrian and North German broadcasters as well as Arte were involved .

The film was produced by the German Rohfilm Factory , co-producers were the Austrian Dor Film and the French Sophie Dulac Productions . Jörn Martens was responsible for the sound, Janina Audick for the costume design , Silke Fischer for the production design and Krisztina Szántó-Konthur for the makeup.

The film was released on DVD in 2019 as part of the Edition Österreichischer Film von Hoanzl and the Standard .

reception

3 days in Quiberon received 2.0 out of four possible stars in the international reviews of the British trade magazine Screen International and, together with La prière and Toppen av ingenting , took 13th place among all 19 Berlinale competition films. Wes Anderson's animated film Isle of Dogs - Atari's Journey (3.3) topped the ranking.

criticism

The film was sharply criticized by Romy Schneider's daughter Sarah Biasini . As always, her mother was in Quiberon for thalassotherapy . Romy Schneider's ex-husband, Daniel Biasini, also called the film a total invention in which nothing corresponds to reality. So in the film the friend from childhood Hilde Fritsch was invented.
