The Austrian film

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Austrian Film - Edition Der Standard , also Edition Austrian Film , is a selection of Austrian fiction , documentary and experimental films that has been published since 2006 in 14 seasons to date, on a total of 325 DVDs .

The purpose of the edition is to make popular and little-known, artistic and commercial Austrian films available at a reasonable price - including many films that are appearing in stores for the first time. The model was the " Cinemathek " of the Süddeutsche Zeitung , which contains international film classics. The price is also the same at 9.90 euros.

The publisher is the Filmverlag Hoanzl , who made the selection in cooperation with the daily newspaper Der Standard and the Filmarchiv Austria and published the first 50 DVDs in 2006. In 2007, the second 50-part series followed, and on October 10, 2008, another 25 pieces - including Die Fälscher , Poppitz , In 3 Days You're Dead and, for the first time, Austrian silent films such as Café Elektric and Die Stadt ohne Juden - were published. Another 25 films followed from 2009 to 2011, and 20 new films in 2012. From 2013 to 2019, 15 more films were added to the series.

History of origin

In 2004 joined George Hoanzl, head of the agency of the same name and distribution company Hoanzl , to the daily newspaper standard approach to assist in the design, selection and application of a 50-part DVD series consisting of Austrian films to look. In view of the mostly low successes of Austrian films at the box office, often with fewer than 10,000 visitors, the skepticism initially outweighed whether there would be enough audience for such a project. But since Georg Hoanzl, according to his own statements, had had a film edition of this kind in mind for many years, even before founding his distribution company specializing in Austrian film, television and cabaret productions, he did not allow himself to be dissuaded from his plan. Based on the example of the film edition of the Süddeutsche Zeitung, an edition consisting solely of Austrian productions was to be created - the selection of the films was the responsibility of the Standard film editorial team. Support was obtained from Ernst Kieninger from Filmarchiv Austria , who supported the selection with historical finds, such as avant-garde films from the 1960s. The entrepreneurial tasks, from the clarification of rights to the distribution of the DVDs, were the responsibility of the Hoanzl employees.

The project was financially supported by the Federal Chancellery , the Austrian Film Institute and the Vienna Film Fund .

In autumn 2007 the edition was expanded by a further 50 parts to 100 DVDs. Some films were released that had to be left out in the final selection of the 50 DVDs for the first part, but there were also films that the rights holders agreed to publish due to the great success of the first edition. Among the 50-added DVDs centers include all six parts of the Alpensaga of Dieter Berner on 3 DVDs and Peter Patzak Kassbach and Florian Flickers No Name City .

At a press conference in the Metro cinema on September 16, 2008, the release of a third, this time 25-part season was announced for October 10. There are 26 feature films and 13 short films on it. For the first time, three Austrian silent films from the 1920s can be found here. According to Hoanzl, the previous parts of the edition have increased the market share of Austrian DVDs to 6% - the goal is 12 to 18%.

By September 2008 around 500,000 DVDs had been sold in 450 sales outlets as well as through direct sales and online dealers. As of October 2007, each title had already sold over 3,000 times, the best-selling even a total of around 9,000 times. Around 1,500 total editions of the first 50-part series had been sold by October 2007. By the end of 2009, a total of 900,000 DVDs from the edition had already been sold. With a share of 0.1% of the total DVD offer in Austria, the edition has a share of 6% in sales according to the 2010 Film Industry Report. In September 2010, when the next expansion of the edition to 175 DVDs was presented, sales of a total of 900,000 DVDs were announced.

Selection criteria

When selecting the films, care was taken to cover the broadest possible spectrum of Austrian filmmaking over the past few decades. But there should also be space in the edition for the great Austrian film successes such as Hinterholz 8 , Komm, Süßer Tod or India . Last but not least, these films should draw more attention to the entire edition and thus also raise public awareness of lesser-known Austrian films. Classics and early works by today's directors such as Michael Glawogger's Megacities or Wolfgang Murnberger's Ich vobe are included as well as little-known but important works of Austrian film from past decades, such as The Vulnerable .
