Margareta Heinrich

Margareta Heinrich (* 1951 in Deutschkreutz , † 1994 in Vienna ) was an Austrian film director.

Life

Born in a small town right on the Austro-Hungarian border, she moved to Vienna at an early age, where she studied screenwriting and directing at the Vienna Film Academy . During this time, she began to be particularly interested in political and feminist topics. In 1975 she made her first film Wo sein Babsy? , 1978 the feature film Twilight based on a story by Ingeborg Bachmann . Her documentaries took her mainly to the Third World, to Nicaragua and Mozambique. In 1988 she was awarded the Ernst Neuberg Prize for her feature film Durch Dick und Dünn . In 1992, the feature film Your happy eyes was made , again based on a story by Ingeborg Bachmann with Cornelia Köndgen and Peter Sattmann in the leading roles. Her last film Totschweigen , a documentary about the Rechnitz massacre , was shown at many international festivals and was awarded the Prix Futura Berlin in 1995. The subject of this film was taken up by Elfriede Jelinek 14 years later . The result was the play Rechnitz (Der Würgeengel) . Margareta Heinrich committed suicide on February 25, 1994.

2016 was in the 10th district of Vienna favorites of Margareta Heinrich path named after her.
