history
Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg . Later in the Roman Empire , the area was part of the province of Pannonia .
Deutschkreutz has been a market town since 1340. Like all of Burgenland (German West Hungary), the place belonged to Hungary until 1920/21 . After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).
From 1671 Deutschkreutz belonged to the seven Jewish communities in Burgenland. The Orthodox Jewish community had a famous Talmud college where Jews from all over the world studied. Due to its worldwide importance for Judaism, Deutschkreutz also uses a Hebrew place name ( Zelem = image in the sense of an idol ). Within Austria this is only the case for Eisenstadt ( Asch ). The community grew significantly in the 19th century and in 1857 counted 1230 people. In 1941 the synagogue in Deutschkreutz was blown up by the National Socialists . The Deutschkreutz Jewish cemetery has been partially restored. The memorial for the Jews of Zelem , in front of the former home of the composer Karl Goldmark , commemorates the Jewish community expelled in 1938.

Culture and sights
- Deutschkreutz Castle : A mighty renaissance castle made of a four-wing building with corner towers and two-storey courtyard arcades was privately owned by the artist Anton Lehmden from 1966 until his death in 2018 , who restored the building and showed a painting exhibition in the castle. His daughter Barbara Lehmden continues the legacy in the artist's sense.
- Parish church Deutschkreutz : The artist Anton Lehmden contributed a total of 35 works to the comprehensive redesign and design of the church.
- Deutschkreutz Jewish cemetery
Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
- Train: Deutschkreutz is on the Burgenland Railway .
- Road: The Deutschkreutzer Straße (B 62), which connects the Hungarian Sopron with the Burgenland expressway (S31).
- Until Hungary joined the European Union on May 1, 2004, the border crossing on the B62 was the northernmost border crossing for cross-border goods traffic south of Lake Neusiedl for trucks from countries other than Austria and Hungary.
Established businesses
Together with the municipalities of Großwarasdorf , Horitschon, Lutzmannsburg, Raiding , Unterpetersdorf and Neckenmarkt, Deutschkreutz forms the Blaufränkischland , the most famous red wine region in Austria, which is otherwise dominated by white wine and whose history goes back to the Celtic era. The Blaufränkisch is deeply dark ruby red and is extraordinarily fruity in this area. It is very often matured in oak barrels and has a very good shelf life. The vineyards of the Blaufränkischland stretch from the southern foothills of the Ödenburg Mountains to the Günser Bergland . The Hungarian Plain opens to the east . As a result, the Pannonian influence, which is necessary for the ripening of the grapes, is fully effective and the predominantly loamy soil also offers ideal conditions. In addition to Blaufränkisch, Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot and Zweigelt are also grown.
The Juvina mineral water spring is also located in the municipality of Deutschkreutz . The Romans were already familiar with this mineral water source , which is older than viticulture in the region.

The ÖVP raised an objection to the result of the 2017 municipal council election, which was examined by the state election authority. On May 4, 2018, the state electoral authority in Eisenstadt decided to repeat the local elections in Deutschkreutz, as there was a very high probability of manipulation. On June 5, 2018 it was announced that the municipal council and mayor would be re-elected on September 9, 2018. At the moment (as of 10/2018) the public prosecutor's office is investigating Kölly on suspicion of abuse of office. In the election on September 9, 2018, the LBL lost one mandate, but remained the parliamentary group with the largest number of mandates. The ÖVP won an additional mandate.
