Stoob ( Hungarian : Csáva , Croatian : Štuma ) is a market town in the Oberpullendorf district in Burgenland in Austria .

geography

The community is located in Central Burgenland in the Stooberbachtal . Stoob is the only place in the parish. Stoob also includes the district of Stoob-Süd, which is attached to Oberpullendorf.

history

Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg .

Later under the Romans, today's Stoob was then in the province of Pannonia .

Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Csáva be used. After the end of the First World War, after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).
Stoob has been a market town since May 1, 1979.

Economy and Infrastructure

Stoob has been known for its pottery since the 17th century . In a land register of the feudal lord Lippay de Zombor 1676 a Thoma Paur is recorded as a stoner in Stoob. A guild jug from 1619 and a guild chest with a brotherhood book and other documents from 1846 have been preserved. According to an official attribution by the guilds from 1851, every fourth house had a master potter.

The Esterházy pottery factory was built in 1895, and there was a clay trade school since 1893 . In 1903 the village consisted of 220 houses, 27 of which were used for pottery. In the time before the First World War , Stoob was a center of the pottery industry through a pottery factory and a clay trade school.

Several pottery companies as well as the State Vocational School for Ceramics, founded in 1956 and initiated as a new building in 1959 (now: State College for Ceramics and Stove Construction Stoob ), the only one of its kind in Austria, emphasize the unbroken importance of this craft for the market community. In addition, pottery courses are offered for those interested.

education

  • In 1925 the Stoob secondary school was built.
