BW

Horitschon ( Hungarian : Haracsony , Croatian : Haračun ) is a market town in Burgenland in the Oberpullendorf district in Austria .

geography

Geographical location

The community is located in Central Burgenland. Together with its neighboring communities Deutschkreutz , Neckenmarkt and Lutzmannsburg, Horitschon is one of the main towns in the Blaufränkischland . However, "Blaufränkischland" is not a geographical name, but a purely regional marketing name.

Community structure

The municipal area comprises the following two localities or cadastral communities of the same name (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

history

Horitschon (top right) around 1880 (recording sheet of the regional survey )

Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg .

Later under the Romans, today's Horitschon was in the province of Pannonia .

Like the whole of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary until 1920/21 . The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ). Horitschon has been a market town since 1983.

From 1993 to 2010 one of Austria's five Hungarian consulates was in Horitschon (Head of Office: Komm.-Rat Michael Leier, owner of the local concrete and building materials plant).

Viticulture

Horitschon is part of the Mittelburgenland wine-growing region. The wine towns of Mittelburgenland market themselves as "Blaufränkischland" due to the dominance of Blaufränkisch cultivation. Together with Neckenmarkt, Deutschkreutz and Lutzmannsburg, Horitschon is one of the main towns in Blaufränkischand. The best vineyard locations in the area are among the most prestigious locations in Central Burgenland.

In the past centuries Horitschon had always been a wine-growing place, but in the past there were comparatively few vines in its own municipality. The Horitschoners had most of the vineyards in Raiding and Neckenmarkt, and to a lesser extent in Unterpetersdorf and Deutschkreutz. The oldest Horitschon vineyards were the "Gfangeräcker", probably also the vineyard "Weingartengfanger". After the end of the feudal system, i.e. from 1848, more vines were planted in Horitschon. Today Horitschon is an outspoken red wine town with the main variety Blaufränkisch. The largest winegrowers' cooperative in the Oberpullendorf district is located in the village. A number of Horitschon wine-growing businesses have achieved national recognition.
