history

Before our era, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg .

Later under the Romans, today's Weppersdorf was then in the province of Pannonia .

Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Veperd be used. After the end of the First World War, after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

In the years 1930/31 the Evangelical Confessional Church ( AB ) was built.

In 1971 the previously independent communities Kalkgruben, Tschurndorf and Weppersdorf were merged to form the large community of Weppersdorf.

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

railroad

With the opening of the Burgenland Railway (also: "Oberpullendorfer Bahn") from Sopron to Köszeg by the "Sopron-Kőszeger Vicinalbahn AG" on November 5, 1908, Weppersdorf received a train station in the south of the community. Even before the opening of this railway line, a serious railway accident occurred on September 19 of this year between Weppersdorf and Lackenbach with a construction train, in which three people were killed and another four people were injured. Especially after the connection of Burgenland to Austria in 1921, the importance of rail transport increased, as many residents (mostly to Vienna) had to commute to work. In addition, there was a corridor traffic in Sopron towards Mattersburg . As a result of the Second World War , passenger traffic on October 6, 1951, and passenger traffic on September 1, 1960, only ran to Rattersdorf-Liebing station, which meant that there was no longer any connection to Hungary . With the advancing motorization and especially with bus traffic, the railroad lost further importance. The abandonment of the station was the result, after the inn next to it had already been demolished. On April 28, 1969, the route was cut further. Due to a damaged bridge over the Rabnitz , Oberpullendorf for passenger traffic and Oberloisdorf for freight traffic were the new terminals. On May 28, 1988, the end of passenger traffic between Deutschkreutz and Oberpullendorf came. From July 1, 2013, all traffic from Deutschkreutz was finally stopped. Since then, only the “Sonnenland Draisinentour”, which has set up a rest stop in Weppersdorf, is reminiscent of the railway line.

Road traffic

Burgenland Straße (B50) runs through the market town from north to south . This forms the main road both in Weppersdorf and in the cadastral communities of Kalkgruben and Tschurndorf. Due to the construction of the Burgenland expressway (S31), which runs in the west of the municipality and to which the municipality has been connected since September 13, 1985, the majority of traffic has shifted to the expressway. Weppersdorf has two junctions on the Burgenland expressway. In the north of the village there is the semi-junction Weppersdorf / Kobersdorf, which leads from and to the north on Kobersdorfer Landesstraße (L103). The Weppersdorf junction is located in the south of the municipality, where the Deutschkreutzer Straße (B62) starts. This has entrances and exits from the B50 in the south of the municipality.

Bus transport

With the increase in individual traffic, Weppersdorf has developed into a center for day commuters since the opening of the Burgenland expressway. This required the Province of Burgenland to build a spacious Park & Ride facility with an attached bus station with four bus platforms in the north of the village in 2002, connected to the roundabout on Burgenland Straße (B50) . The car park has been expanded in stages and has around 150 parking spaces in 2016. Due to the utilization, it was taken into account that this can be expanded further. From the bus station there are direct express courses to Vienna, but also courses to Deutschkreutz , Eisenstadt , Mattersburg and Wiener Neustadt . A special feature is the course to Mariazell on Sundays and public holidays in summer .
