The Schwarzenbach ( Hungarian : Csávai patak ) is a creek about 35 kilometers long in Lower Austria and Burgenland .

The course of the brook

The source streams of the Schwarzenbach are located in the municipal areas of Wiesmath , Hochwolkersdorf and Schwarzenbach . It is created by the confluence of the Oberau Bach and the Graben Bach in the municipality of the market town of Schwarzenbach, of which it is named. It flows into the Rabnitz (Hungarian: Répce ) at Strebersdorf , this into the Moson-Danube (Hungarian: Mosoni Duna ). Its largest tributaries are the Mühlbach (Hungarian: Málompatak ) and the Sieggrabenbach (Hungarian: Szikra-patak ) in Weppersdorf , the Gaberlingbach (Hungarian: Gaberling-patak ) in Mitterpullendorf and the Raidingbach (Hungarian: Doborján-patak ) in Strebersdorf shortly before the Estuary into the Rabnitz. Another tributary is the Rainbach near Kobersdorf .

The name "Schwarzenbach"

The stream owes its name "Schwarzenbach" to its dark channel, especially in earlier times. The narrow valley is generally shady. The lighting used to be even more sparse because the forest was closed and denser. Before the torrent control, the stream bed meandered in many curves between dense willow and alder stands. Where the subsoil was still formed by blue tegel , the water actually looked, especially in deeper, calm areas, an ink-like black.

The "Stooberbach"

From the confluence of the Sieggrabenbach in the Schwarzenbach south of Weppersdorf , people in Burgenland also speak of the “Stooberbach” (Hungarian: “Csáva-patak”) or the “Stoob”; (Hungarian: "Csáva", Croat. "Čava"). The name “ Stoob ” is also translated as “dark” and “cloudy” in one of its interpretations.

In a boundary description of Klostermarienberg from 1225, the Stooberbach is called "Sawa" (in German translation: "the Safa"). The name of the stream contains the old Slavic word "šcava", which can mean mineral water, acidic water or cloudy water (ie: "black"). In 1263 the brook was also called "Choa".
