Karl Stix

Karl Stix (born October 24, 1939 in Wiener Neustadt ; † July 5, 2003 in Hornstein ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ).

Life

Karl Stix was born the son of a train driver. He spent his childhood and youth in Rohrbach near Mattersburg . After training as a locksmith and marrying his wife Erika, he began his political career in 1962. Stix was from mid-1991 to late 2000 Burgenland provincial governor . In 1999 Stix suffered a serious car accident, in the summer of 2000 he was linked to the scandal surrounding the Bank Burgenland , which led to his withdrawal from politics at the end of 2000.

His greatest political success was the recognition of Burgenland as an Objective 1 region of EU regional funding policy . This, combined with the benefits from the fall of the Iron Curtain, resulted in a strong economic upswing.

Karl Stix died at his home in Hornstein on July 5, 2003 of cancer .
