history
Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg .
Under the Romans, today's Hornstein was located in the province of Pannonia .
The place was first mentioned in 1271 as terra zorm . In 1365 the Kanizsay family bought the castle in Hornstein from the Wolfurt family, which they expanded into a lordship by purchasing goods from Nikolaus II von Pöttelsdorf , the von Roy family and the Gutkeled family . The Kanizsay then also called themselves Counts of Hornstein .
Like all of Burgenland, Hornstein belonged to Hungary ( Sopron County ) until 1920/21 . The German place name is the mirror translation of the Hungarian medieval version Szarvkő ( Zorwku , 1347; Zarwku , 1364; Harrenstein , 1415; Hornstheyn , 1485).
Market rights were granted to the place before 1555 and renewed in 1651 and around 1845. During the Turkish war in 1529 the place was destroyed and in 1532 a new foundation was made with Croats.
After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).
