Purbach am Neusiedler See in Burgenland ( Austria ) is a town with 2885 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) on the west bank of the Neusiedler See . Purbach is known for its old town center with its historic town wall and for the idyllic Kellergasse.
geography
The city is located in northern Burgenland near the state capital Eisenstadt. No other localities belong to the municipality. Districts are the Florianisiedlung and the Waldsiedlung in the northwest of Purbach. Parts of the urban area are located in the Neusiedlersee - Leithagebirge nature park .

history
There are finds from the early and late Bronze Age in the local area . A settlement from the Hallstatt period is attested by finds on the Burgstall (north of the village). There are also Roman settlement finds. Under the Romans, today's Purbach was in the province of Pannonia .
In 1527 Purbach was raised to the market. In 1529 and 1532 the market was sacked by the Turks.
Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Feketeváros be used.
After the end of the First World War, after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).
Purbach am Neusiedler See has been a municipality since 1997 (through VO 22, market municipality 24/1976).

Economy and Infrastructure
Purbach is on Burgenland Strasse (B 50). Purbach is also connected to the Ostbahn network with the Pannoniabahn .
The Purbach economy is shaped by viticulture and tourism. The insulation material manufacturer Austrotherm is the only major industrial company with a local branch.
Viticulture and wine culture
Purbach has always been an important wine-growing community. As early as 1632, an imperial document issued by Ferdinand II. Purbach a "privilege on the free export of wine for peculiar Paw wine via the Leytha to the Ezherzogthumb Austria under the Enns and other countries".
The Purbacher Kellergasse is famous and is considered the most beautiful of its kind in Burgenland. At the beginning of the Kellergasse is the "Haus am Kellerplatz", a community vinotheque with an innovative wine dispensing system. The landmark of Purbach is the " Purbacher Turk ", around whom a wine legend is entwined.

Parish council
In addition to Mayor Richard Hermann (ÖVP) and the two Vice Mayors Gerhard Wein (SPÖ) and Peter Gmeiner (ÖVP), the City Councilors Oswald Brunäcker (ÖVP), Johann Egermann (ÖVP), Harald Neumayer (SPÖ) and Elisabeth Schüller (SPÖ) also belong to the Parish council.
The municipal treasurer is Johann Moser (ÖVP) and the environmental councilor is Johann Egermann (ÖVP).
mayor
Mayor is Richard Hermann (ÖVP), who succeeded Franz Steindl (ÖVP) on March 25, 2001 after his change on December 28, 2000 as Deputy Governor. In the direct mayor election on October 1, 2017, Hermann was only just barely confirmed in his office with 50.47%. He lost 17.45% of the vote compared to the 2012 election. Especially with Gerhard Wein (SPÖ), who achieved 44.21%, he had a strong competitor, while Martin Sandhofer (FPÖ) only got 5.32%.
At the constituent meeting of the municipal council on October 24, 2017, Gerhard Wein (SPÖ) was elected first vice mayor and Peter Gmeiner (ÖVP) was elected second vice mayor.
Office manager is Michael Hoffmann.
