history

Purbach on Lake Neusiedl, which dried up at the time, around 1873 (excerpt from the recording sheet of the regional survey )

There are finds from the early and late Bronze Age in the local area . A settlement from the Hallstatt period is attested by finds on the Burgstall (north of the village). There are also Roman settlement finds. Under the Romans, today's Purbach was in the province of Pannonia .

In 1527 Purbach was raised to the market. In 1529 and 1532 the market was sacked by the Turks.

Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Feketeváros be used.

After the end of the First World War, after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

Purbach am Neusiedler See has been a municipality since 1997 (through VO 22, market municipality 24/1976).

Landmark of Purbach am Neusiedler See: The Purbach Turk

Purbach has always been an important wine-growing community. As early as 1632, an imperial document issued by Ferdinand II. Purbach a "privilege on the free export of wine for peculiar Paw wine via the Leytha to the Ezherzogthumb Austria under the Enns and other countries".

The Purbacher Kellergasse is famous and is considered the most beautiful of its kind in Burgenland. At the beginning of the Kellergasse is the "Haus am Kellerplatz", a community vinotheque with an innovative wine dispensing system. The landmark of Purbach is the " Purbacher Turk ", around whom a wine legend is entwined.
