geography

The municipality is located in northern Burgenland, 7 km from the state capital Eisenstadt on the border with Hungary and near Lake Neusiedl .

history

One of the Siegendorf barrows

Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg .

In the Schuschenwald two and a half kilometers outside the village, four barrows from the late Bronze Age indicate an earlier settlement.

Later under the Romans, today's Siegendorf was then in the province of Pannonia .

The place belonged, like the whole of Burgenland, to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Cinfalva be used. After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

Siegendorfer in the political resistance (1939-1945)

According to the records of the documentation archives of the Austrian Resistance and the victim guide files of the Burgenland social department, at least 14 Siegendorf residents were temporarily interned in Nazi custody or in concentration camps for political reasons. Furthermore, 3 members of a communist resistance cell were executed in the village.

Thanks to impulses from Wiener Neustädter cells, a political circle was formed even before the annexation to the Third Reich, consisting of former social democrats, functionaries of the Communist Party and revolutionary socialists. This originated from working together in the Zillingdorf mine and the activities included the design of printed matter and the collection of solidarity contributions for comrades in need and their families. Until his call-up in 1941, Johann Wild was in charge, followed by the unskilled worker Mathias Karlovits.

The cell came to its tragic end in 1942: five members were sentenced to three years in prison, Mathias Karlovits and the cashier were sentenced to death and executed on November 2, 1943. Andreas Posteiner, another member of the circle, was sentenced to four years in the Stein an der Donau prison. There he was shot dead during the massacre in the Stein prison on April 6, 1945 by alarm units from the police, the Kremser Volkssturm , the Wehrmacht garrison and the  Waffen SS .

In addition, the tank grenadier Thomas Novak was sentenced to death, who had left his unit without permission towards the end of the war. However, he was caught and the sentence was carried out on March 14, 1945.
