Sankt Margarethen im Burgenland is a market town with 2669 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in Burgenland in the Eisenstadt-Umgebung district in Austria . The Hungarian place name of the municipality is Szentmargitbánya .
geography
The community is located in northern Burgenland near the state capital Eisenstadt. Sankt Margarethen in Burgenland is the only village in the municipality. Other locations are the industrial center, commercial and trading park, the Sankt Margarethen-Berg weekend house settlement, the Märchenwald zoo, the Sulzhof, the mills Klostermühle and Eselmühle, which are now inns, and the Roman quarry .
history
Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg .
Later under the Romans, today's Sankt Margarethen was in the province of Pannonia .
Sankt Margarethen has been a market town in Burgenland since 1647. Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German West Hungary) until 1920/21 . From 1867 the Hungarian name was "Szentmargitbánya". Since 1898 the name "Margita" had to be used due to the Hungarian government in Budapest .
After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the then newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).
At today's border crossing point between Sankt Margarethen and Sopronkőhida (Hungary) on August 19, 1989, on the edge of the Pan-European Picnic, several hundred GDR citizens managed to escape across the border then sealed off to the West. Today, this event is widely regarded as groundbreaking for the fall of the Iron Curtain .

Culture and sights
- Roman quarry St. Margarethen : The most famous sight is the Roman quarry, in which St. Margarethen sand-lime stone is still mined today. Here, among other things, the building material for Vienna's St. Stephen's Cathedral was obtained , but also later for the construction of many buildings along Vienna's Ringstrasse .
- Sculpture's house in Sankt Margarethen with sculptures at the Roman quarry
- Parish Church of St. Margarethen in Burgenland : Another attraction in St. Margarethen is the parish church, which is essentially Gothic. The current building was completed in 1516. The baroque sandstone pulpit dates from 1795. The church was expanded in 1959/60. In 1991 the chancel was redesigned.
- Karner from the 14th century
- 17th century pillory
- Familypark Neusiedlersee : the largest amusement park in Austria with around 140,000 m²
Regular events
- Opera Festival St. Margarethen : The well-known 'Opera Festival St. Margarethen' takes place every summer in the disused part of the quarry.
- Passion plays in the Roman quarry: Around 450 amateur actors and a further 200 employees from all ages and professions - mainly from St. Margarethen - perform the 'Passion plays' in the Roman quarry every 5 years. In 1926, Passion Plays were shown for the first time in a farm in St. Margarethen. The natural backdrop of the Roman quarry has been used since 1961 for the performance, which takes place every five years. In 2001 a total of 70,000 visitors came on 20 match days. The net proceeds of the performances are used to support parish, social and missionary projects. The next Passion Play will take place again in 2016 in the Roman quarry.
- Sculpture symposium St. Margarethen : In and around the Roman quarry there are more than 100 sculptures. From 1959 to the 1970s , sculptor symposia were held here on the initiative of Karl Prantl ( Symposium of European Sculptors ). The sculpture symposium in St. Margarethen was the initial spark for a worldwide movement that was reflected in numerous new sculptor symposia in Europe, America and Asia in the course of the following decades (see also Street of Sculptures (St. Wendel) and Stones on the Border ).
