Zagersdorf is a municipality with 1076 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in Burgenland in the Eisenstadt-Umgebung district in Austria . The Hungarian name of the municipality is Zárány . Zagersdorf (Croatian name Cogrštof ) is part of the settlement area of ​​the Burgenland-Croatian ethnic group.

geography

The municipality is located in the middle of a wine-growing region in northern Burgenland, near the state capital Eisenstadt , on the border with Hungary . Zagersdorf is the only place in the municipality.

history

Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg .

Later under the Romans, today's Zagersdorf was in the province of Pannonia .

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1461/62. After the destruction by the Turks in 1532, Croatians repopulated.

Like all of Burgenland, Zagersdorf belonged to Hungary (German West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Zárány be used. After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

Zagersdorf was amalgamated with the municipality of Siegendorf from January 1, 1971 to December 31, 1991 due to the structural reform of the municipality . During this time, too, Zagersdorf tried to maintain its independence.

Parish council

In addition to Mayor Helmut Zakall (SPÖ) and Vice Mayor Christoph Zarits (ÖVP), Ivan Grujic (SPÖ), Kurt Javorski (SPÖ) and Michael Uller (ÖVP) are also members of the community board.

Mayor is Helmut Zakall (SPÖ). Zakall was able to prevail in the direct mayor election in 2002 with 56.39% against the then incumbent mayor Matthias Fritz (ÖVP), who had headed the community since 1992. In the 2017 direct election, Zakall was confirmed in his office in the first ballot with 60.41% of the votes. His two competitors Christoph Zarits (ÖVP), who failed in 2012 because of Zakall, and Otmar Eisner (BLZ) did not get above 37.23% and 2.36% respectively. Zarits, who has been a member of the National Council for the ÖVP since November 9, 2017 , was re-elected Vice Mayor at the constituent meeting of the municipal council.
