Müllendorf is a municipality with 1,383 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Eisenstadt-Umgebung district in Burgenland .

The Hungarian place name of the municipality is Szárazvám .

geography

Müllendorf is located in northern Burgenland near the state capital Eisenstadt . The community is a hillside settlement and spreads over the southern slope of the Leithagebirge over the Müllendorfer Senke to the north and west foothills of the Föllig . Müllendorf is the only place in the community.

history

Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg .

Later under the Romans, today's garbage village was then in the province of Pannonia . During an emergency excavation by PannArch in March 2019, the discovery of coins and the remains of 5 buildings and thus a small town structure was reported.

Müllendorf was first mentioned in a document in 1271. In the Middle Ages there was a toll station here. In 1569 the place was called a market. There was destruction in the years 1529, 1532, 1605, 1683 and 1705. A major fire struck the Müllendorf in 1915.

Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Szárazvám be used. After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

The village of Müllendorf belonged to the Mattersdorf-Forchtenstein rule with a few interruptions. After the abolition of manorial rule, the village was part of the chair judge's office, judicial district and tax district Kismarton (Eisenstadt) until 1921. Since Müllendorf is located between the cities of Ödenburg and Vienna, it was badly affected by all warlike events. The place suffered not only from the Turkish wars and the Kuruzzen incursions, but also from arson, troop marches, requisitions, epidemics, murder, manslaughter and rape during and after the campaigns.

In June 1915 a devastating fire broke out that spread to three quarters of the community within a few hours. Only a few houses survived the event, with some residents being homeless. In 1917 - during the First World War - the residents had to deliver grain, potatoes and fat. Furthermore, all but one of the bells of the church were removed, as well as the metal pipes of the organ. After the end of the war in 1918, the Hungarian soldiers, including the Müllendorfers, returned home.

At the peace conference in Paris in the summer of 1919, the annexation of the western Hungarian regions to Austria was promised. The area was supposed to be handed over to Austria in August 1921, but Hungarian irregulars opposed this.

On April 15, 1945 - still during the Second World War - a provisional mayor was appointed who was also able to communicate with the Russian soldiers. After the end of the war on May 8, 1945, the situation calmed down a little. The passage of the supply troops came to an end. In the second half of 1945 the return of prisoners of war increased.
