The PET to PET Recycling Austria GmbH is an Austrian recycling -Unternehmen based in Müllendorf . It is operated by the companies Coca-Cola Hellenic Austria, Radlberger Getränke, Rauch Fruchtsaft , Spitz and Vöslauer and closes the recycling cycle for PET bottles in Austria.

history

In 2004, the shareholders signed a sustainability agenda which, among other things, aims to achieve ecological recycling. PET to PET Recycling Austria GmbH was founded on April 26th, 2006 and put into operation in 2007. In autumn 2010, the plant was expanded further, a granulation plant was added and it was completely converted to the production of food-grade PET recyclate (PET flakes and PET granulate). In August 2011, the company continued to invest in the expansion of the system and implemented a pre-sorting system as a measure to increase efficiency.

With the consistent expansion, the company is taking into account the increased PET collection morale of the Austrians - around 8 out of 10 PET bottles in this country end up in the separate collection via yellow bin or yellow sack.

The recycling plant in Müllendorf

The company operates the only plant in the country for PET recycling and thus enables a closed recycling of this material in Austria. In the facility in Müllendorf, Burgenland, built in accordance with the latest technical standards, 6,000 to 7,000 tons of PET material have been processed annually into raw material for new PET bottles since it was commissioned in August 2007.

The recycling plant in Müllendorf can process around 20,000 tons of PET bottles annually, that is around 570 million pieces. After processing by the company, the material obtained is available to all companies in the beverage industry that meet the requirements of the sustainability agenda. The quantities are based on the percentage of their "placed on the market" (according to ARA statistics), that is, the more bottles a company puts into circulation through retailers, the larger the quantities of processed material are available to the beverage manufacturer. The recycled material, the so-called PET flakes and PET granulate, are delivered to the preform and bottle manufacturers of the beverage companies and added to the raw material for new bottles. The finished bottles or preforms are filled in the beverage companies' filling systems, then are returned to the consumer via retail and thus back to the start of the PET cycle.

The URRC process (United Resource Recovery Corporation) is used to produce raw material for new bottles from old PET bottles. Old PET bottles are cleaned without melting or filtration, saving energy and materials and according to the highest food standards. The flakes recycled by the company are mainly used as a high-quality base material for PET bottles, but can also be used to produce textiles, polyester films or packaging tapes. The majority of the flakes, however, end up with the preform and bottle manufacturers in the beverage industry, where up to 50 percent - depending on bottle requirements, more - PET recyclate is added to the production of new PET bottles.
