The Mk. 6 helmet and its successor, the Mark 6A , are the standard helmets used by the British armed forces . The Mk. 6 replaced the Mk. III and the Mk. 5 from 1986. When designing the helmet, care was taken to ensure that high-performance hearing protection and communication electronics could be integrated into the new helmet. In addition, the soldiers should be able to wear gas masks under their helmets. The helmet is made by NP Aerospace. The standard version of the helmet is dark green. The British Army uses fabric covers with the appropriate camouflage pattern (desert camouflage, winter camouflage, etc.) depending on the various areas of operation. Blue fabric covers are available for operations under the command of the UN . The nickname of the helmet among the soldiers is "Bowler hat". The Mk. 6 is not - as is often claimed - made of Kevlar , but of "ballistic nylon".

Mk. 6A

Since 2005 the Mk. 6 has been gradually replaced by the improved version Mk. 6A, whereby the two helmets can hardly be distinguished from one another from the outside. Fighting units or units stationed abroad are preferably equipped with the new helmet. The Mk. 6A is in turn manufactured by NP Aerospace. The Mk. 6A offers improved protection against splinters and projectiles, but is also a bit heavier.
