Samuel de Lange junior (born February 22, 1840 in Rotterdam , † July 7, 1911 in Stuttgart ) was a Dutch-German organist , teacher and composer .

Life

Samuel de Lange (jr.) Was the son of the Rotterdam music teacher and organist Samuel de Lange (sr.). In the year of his birth, de Lange's father founded a piano factory "Rijken & de Lange", which still exists in Rotterdam today.

Samuel de Lange studied organ with Alexander Winterberger , a pupil of Liszt , piano with Karol von Mikuli , a pupil of Chopin, and composition with Johannes Verhulst and Berthold Damcke . Already at an early age he emerged as an organ and piano virtuoso. De Lange studied in Lemberg from 1858 , where he lived until 1863 and gave piano lessons at the local music conservatory for the last three years. From 1864 he was organist and organ teacher in Rotterdam. Further stations were Basel in 1874 , Paris in 1876 , Cologne in 1877 , The Hague in 1884 and Stuttgart from 1893 . In 1871 he took part in the Dutch premiere of Brahms' 1st piano concerto .

In Stuttgart he became a lecturer at the conservatory and from 1895 a professor. He headed the conservatory from 1900 to 1908. As a composer, he emerged in all genres with a focus on church music . The oratorio Mose (1889) deserves special mention . He gave the Apparatus Musico Organisticus of Georg Muffat out.

Compositions

Samuel de Lange's (jr.) Musical oeuvre comprises more than 800 compositions, including 13 string quartets, many organ compositions, three cello, two piano, two violin concertos and one viola concerto. He also created four piano sonatas, four violin sonatas, a clarinet sonata, three cello sonatas, five piano trios, a piano quintet, a string quintet and hundreds of vocal pieces. De Lange's complete organ work was first published on CD in 2015, performed by the Dutch organist Gerben Budding . In addition, recordings of two cello sonatas, various songs and some piano works were recorded. De Lange is known for his Daily Pedal Exercises , a book of exercises for pedaling .
