Klingenbach ( Croatian : Klimpuh , Hungarian : Kelénpatak ) is a mixed-language municipality with 1147 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in Burgenland in the Eisenstadt-Umgebung district in Austria . The border crossing Klingenbach / Sopron to Hungary is named after the place.

geography

The community is located in northern Burgenland near the state capital Eisenstadt . Klingenbach is the only place in the municipality.

It is named after the Klingenbach , which rises in the local area and flows along the Ödenburger Bundesstrasse (B16) to the Siegendorf municipal area, where it flows into the Nodbach from the right .

history

Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg .

Later under the Romans, today's Klingenbach was then in the province of Pannonia .

Based on a stone ax find , it is assumed that the parish area was settled as early as 5,500–4,300 years before Christ. There was also a woman's grave from the early La Tène period (around 350 BC) in the local area , which contained two bronze bracelets , a finger ring and accessories .

In Roman times there was the Villa Rustica , a Roman estate, and Roman barrows, as the settlement was located directly on the Roman road from Scarbantia ( Sopron ) to Vindobona ( Vienna ). Part of this country road is now the Hotterweg between Klingenbach and Zagersdorf .

The first documentary mention of the place as "possessio wlgariter Chlingenpach" comes from the year 1276. The document reports on the handover of the Klingenbach estate including accessories to the Marienberg Abbey , whose donation is also recorded in writing in 1277.

In the 14th century the village had several owners. In 1416/17 the village, called "Chlingendorf", came under the sovereignty of the nearby town of Ödenburg . In 1510 the King of Hungary Ladislaus II issued all taxes and contributions to the city of Ödenburg and the associated city villages, including Klingenbach, for a period of two years so that the city's fortifications could be expanded and repaired.

After the place had been attacked and looted by robber barons from Landsee Castle in 1523 , it was destroyed in the course of the first Turkish siege of Vienna in 1529 , but was settled again and rebuilt by Burgenland Croats .

From 1848 until the dissolution of the manor in 1886, Klingenbach belonged to the district commissioner (later chair judge ) and the Eisenstadt tax district within the Ödenburg county . On October 1, 1895, Klingenbach was combined with the villages of Baumgarten , Trausdorf , Schattendorf , Siegendorf and some other communities to form a state matriculation district (parent district) with its seat in Schattendorf, Mattersburg chair district . From 1886 to 1921 it belonged again to the chair district of Ödenburg .

Like all of Burgenland, Klingenbach belonged to Hungary ( German West Hungary ) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Kelénpatak be used.

After the end of the First World War, after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded state of Burgenland since 1921.

On July 1, 1923, Klingenbach was separated from the Schattendorf matriculation district and formed its own matriculation district with the neighboring community of Zagersdorf, which existed until December 31, 1970. From 1945 to 1955 the place was part of the Soviet zone of occupation in occupied Austria . On January 1, 1971, Zagersdorf was detached from the previous administrative unit with Klingenbach and united with Siegendorf to form a new political municipality.

Population development

According to the 2001 census, Klingenbach had 1,189 inhabitants, 73.1% of whom were members of the Burgenland-Croatian ethnic group (9.3% also indicated Croatian as a colloquial language). The proportion of the German-speaking ethnic group was 13.4%.
