Sopronbánfalva ( Bánfalva , German Wandorf ) is now a district of Sopron in Hungary . It lies on the Austro-Hungarian border.

location

The location of the place is well suited for a settlement. This is where mountains and a large plain meet. A stream flows through the valley. Near the village is Ödenburg. Wandorf can be characterized by its hilly terrain.

population

According to a census, the population was around 150 in the 16th century. In the 17th century, between 250 and 300 inhabitants and in the 18th century between 750 and 800 people are said to have lived in Wandorf. In a census of 1884/85 the population was 848 inhabitants. Thus the population had increased by almost 300% in a hundred years. This increase is due to waves of immigration from German-speaking countries, so that the population consisted almost entirely of Hungarian Germans . At the same time, the population of Ödenburg only doubled. Today around 2000 people live in the Wandorf district of Ödenburg.

At the beginning of the 19th century the population was purely German-speaking . In the following period the proportion of the Hungarian population slowly increased. Their number increased particularly during the war years of the First and Second World Wars because there was a hospital in the region. A large part of the population had an almost perfect command of Hungarian in addition to their mother tongue, German . Although there was no language law, the number of Wandorfer who spoke Hungarian rose steadily.

After the Second World War, a large part of the German-speaking population was expelled in 1946 . Nevertheless, a Hungarian-German presence has persisted, and today there is the German Nationality School Ödenburg in the district of Bánfalva / Wandorf , where 5 hours of German per week are taught from 1st grade and some other subjects are also taught in the bilingual classes.
