Jules Van den Heuvel
Jules Norbert Marie Van den Heuvel (born November 16, 1854 in Ghent , East Flanders , Belgium , † October 22, 1926 there ) was a Belgian university professor , ambassador and politician of the Catholic Party .
biography
After attending school , Van den Heuvel studied law , political science and administration and completed these studies with a doctorate . After being admitted to the 1879 Lawyer received, he became in 1883 Professor of Public Law at the Catholic University of Leuven .
In August 1899 he was appointed Minister of Justice in his cabinet by Prime Minister Paul de Smet de Naeyer and was a member of this until the end of de Smet de Naeyer's term in May 1907. During his tenure as Minister of Justice, he initiated reforms in employment contract law , gambling , divorce law, Société anonyme law and paternity law .
When he left the government on May 1, 1907, he was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State . Shortly afterwards, from June to October 1907, he was a delegate at the 2nd Hague Peace Conference .
In May 1908 he became a correspondent and then in May 1919 a full member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts of Belgium .
He was also ambassador to the Holy See from 1915 to 1918 . Foreign Minister Paul Hymans also appointed him his advisor at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 .
