history

[More detailed information can be found here .]

The academy was founded in 1769 as a "Literary Society" under the patronage of Johann Karl Philipp Graf Cobenzl on behalf of Empress Maria Theresia and Karl Alexander von Lorraine .

With an imperial patent dated December 16, 1772, the society became the Caesarea ac Regia Scientiarum et Litterarum Academia Bruxellis (Imperial and Royal Academy of Sciences and Literature in Brussels), in French Académie impériale et royale des Sciences et Belles-Lettres de Bruxelles, with the obligation of members to promote intellectual life and scientific research. Since then it has often been referred to as "La Thérésienne" .

During the twenty-two years of French occupation during the coalition wars and the Napoleonic era , the academy ceased operations on May 21, 1794. It could only be resumed by the decree of King Wilhelm I of May 7, 1816.

With the decree of King Leopold I of December 1, 1845, the institution was reorganized, including by dividing it into the departments of science and literature and adding the department of fine arts . Since then it has had its current name.

In the course of the Belgian state reform of 1970, the academy was split up, creating the equivalent Dutch- speaking Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten , while the organization, while retaining the French name, has only been responsible for the French-speaking part of Belgium since July 1, 1971 Has French as its lingua franca.

The Academy is located in the Palace of the Academies , the former residence of the Prince of Orange . Planned by the Belgian architect Charles Vander Straeten , this was built in the years 1823–1828 in the neoclassical style by the Belgian architect Tieleman Franciscus Suys .
