Johann Karl Philipp Count Cobenzl
Johann Karl Philipp Graf Cobenzl , Baron zu Prosegg (today Prosecco, Trieste), Lueg (today Predjama Castle ), Leittenburg and Mossau ( Mossa ) (born July 21, 1712 in Laibach ; † January 27, 1770 in Brussels ), was an Austrian Politician and founder of the Literary Society , the predecessor organization of today's Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts of Belgium .
Life
He was born as the third of seven children of the Imperial and Royal Chamberlain Johann Caspar II. Count Cobenzl (1664-1742), from the ancient Carinthian noble family Cobenzl , and his second wife Carolina Sophia, Countess von Rindsmaul (1682-1756), who was married to him in 1708 .
He entered the diplomatic service of the Habsburg Empire very early on, and in 1730 became chamberlain to Emperor Charles VI. , 1735 Imperial Court Councilor and 1746 Privy Councilor. In April 1748, as imperial election commissioner, he led the negotiations in Mainz , from which on April 22, 1748 Count Johann Friedrich Karl von Ostein emerged as elector . As the Imperial Privy Councilor, he was envoy and minister to the Electoral and Upper Rhine , Franconian , Swabian and Westphalian imperial circles . In 1749 he tried in vain to have the Elector of Mainz also elected Bishop of Würzburg .
In 1753 he received the post of treasurer and plenipotentiary minister of state in the Austrian Netherlands and thus the management of the administration under Prince Karl Alexander of Lorraine . In Brussels he founded a literary society (Société littéraire) in 1769, which three years later became the Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts in Brussels (today's Royal Academy of Belgium).
He died while still in office on January 27, 1770 in Brussels. His generosity had so shattered his private finances that Empress Maria Theresa paid his debts twice and granted his widow Maria Theresia (1719–1771) state support. She married Countess Pálffy on November 24, 1734; the marriage had ten children.
His art collection ended up in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg soon after his death .
Appreciation
