Oggau am Neusiedler See is a place with 1753 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in Burgenland on the west bank of the Neusiedler See . Since 1994 the place has the status of a market town .

history

Oggau in the recording sheet of the Francisco-Josephinian state survey (1873)

Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg .

Later under the Romans, today's Oggau was then in the province of Pannonia . During excavations, drinking bowls with remains of red wine from Roman times were found. Because of this find, Oggau is the "oldest red wine community in Austria".

The place name is first attested in 1344 as villa Zaka . This form comes from the old Hungarian personal name Sac . The settlement is named after its first owner.

In German, the initial sibilance / s / of the name, which is not further understandable, was identified with the mhd. Preposition ze ("zu; in"), which is very common in determining locations ; if you omitted the supposed preposition, the only place name that remained was today's Oggau . This Germanized form, in turn, was soon borrowed back into Hungarian and has been attested as Oka since 1393 .

Like the whole of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary until 1920/21 . After the end of the First World War, after bitter negotiations, part of Hungary was assigned to Austria in the Treaty of Trianon 1920. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

Between October 1944 and April 1945, Hungarian Jews were used as slave labor in the quarry .

Oggau am Neusiedler See has been a market town since 1994 (through VO 16).
