Josef Lentsch

Josef Lentsch (born February 24, 1909 in Oggau ; † January 27, 1988 in Kleinhöflein in Burgenland ) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and governor of Burgenland from 1961 to 1964 .

Life

Before Austria was annexed to Hitler's Germany , Lentsch worked as a teacher, and from 1935 also in the state school administration. In addition, he wrote folklore articles - which he continued throughout his life. He collected and documented over 4,000 German-language Marian songs .

During the Second World War , Lentsch served in the Wehrmacht and in 1945 was taken prisoner by the Americans .

Since 1955 he was an honorary member of the Catholic student association KaV Austo-Peisonia Vienna in the ÖCV .

politics

In 1945 Lentsch took over the post of state party secretary of the Austrian People's Party (until 1960), which had been founded a few weeks earlier, from 1945 he sat in the Burgenland state parliament , from 1949 as state councilor for the school system .

On August 8, 1961, he took over the office of governor from Johann Wagner , and in 1963 he succeeded Lorenz Karall as provincial party leader. Lentsch was the top candidate of the ÖVP in the state elections in 1964 , but had to undergo several operations in the middle of the election campaign because of an allergic reaction . His absence from the election campaign was one reason his party's defeat in the election. The ÖVP lost its majority and Lentsch left office on June 12, 1964. This change of power was the first at regional level in the Austrian post-war period; since then the SPÖ has governed Burgenland .

After his recovery, Lentsch returned to the party leadership, but resigned from all political offices in 1968.
