Walter Prior

Walter Prior (born March 9, 1947 in Siegendorf , Burgenland , † April 13, 2021 ) was an Austrian politician of the SPÖ . Prior was a member of the Burgenland State Parliament from 1987 to 2010 and its 1st President from 2000.

education and profession

After primary school, Walter Prior attended a federal high school for five years and then graduated from the construction school at HTL Mödling . Prior worked from 1965 to 1967 for the construction company PLANA in Vienna and Vöcklabruck . He then worked for the Felsinger company in Oeynhausen in 1967 and in 1968 moved to the office of the Burgenland provincial government .

politics

Prior was a member of the Siegendorf municipal council from 1977 to 1997 and was mayor between 1983 and 1996. Prior also took on the role of President of the Social Democratic Association of Community Representatives between 1993 and 2001 and, as a member of the Croatian ethnic group , was President of the SPÖ mandataries from Croatian and mixed-language communities from 1988 to 2003.

In addition, Prior had held the function of district party chairman of the SPÖ Eisenstadt-Umgebung since 1993 and was a member of the Burgenland state party presidency and state party executive. Prior was a member of the Austria Convention from 2003 to 2005 and was a deputy member of the European Committee of the Regions (Brussels). From October 30, 1987 Prior represented the SPÖ as a member of the Burgenland Landtag, and from December 28, 2000 he held the office of First President of the Landtag . After the state elections in Burgenland in 2010 , Prior ended his political career and retired. He resigned from the state parliament on June 24, 2010. His successor as the first president of the state parliament was his party colleague Gerhard Steier , who also came from Siegendorf .

Walter Prior died on April 13, 2021 after a long and serious illness at the age of 75.
