Illedits has been President of ASKÖ Burgenland since 2008 . Illedits was also chairman of the LEADER action group "Nordburgenland plus", which is responsible for EU regional funding in the districts of Neusiedl am See , Eisenstadt-Umgebung and Mattersburg. In this role, Claudia Schlager succeeded him in 2020 . From 2010 Illedits also represented Burgenland in the EU Committee of the Regions.
From December 28, 2000, Illedits represented the SPÖ in the Burgenland State Parliament, where he was a member of the main, state control, legal and economic committee, the committee for European integration and cross-border cooperation as well as the finance, budget and budget committee. On March 21, 2003, he took over the role of club chairman of the SPÖ in the state parliament and was also area spokesman for Europe, sport and renewable energy.

In the state government Doskozil I on February 28, 2019, he took over the agendas of Astrid Eisenkopf's municipalities and Norbert Darabos' social affairs, among other things . The previous state councilor Verena Dunst succeeded him as state parliament president.
On August 1, 2020, Illedits announced that he was stepping down from all his offices. The decisive factor was the acceptance of a 100 gram gold bar on the occasion of his 60th birthday in 2018, which he would have had to refuse due to his position as President of the State Parliament. He got the bar in his role as head of the supervisory board of the Burgenland Football Academy of SV Mattersburg . Its president Martin Pucher had resigned shortly before due to the accounting scandal surrounding the commercial bank Mattersburg in Burgenland , which he founded . Pucher had also been Illedits' deputy on the football academy's board of directors. After his resignation, the official in the office of the Burgenland provincial government Sonja Windisch took over the business of the open government position on an interim basis. On August 12, 2020 Leonhard Schneemann was presented as his successor as social and economic councilor in the state government Doskozil II and Dieter Posch as Illedit's successor as district chairman of the SPÖ Mattersburg.
