Martin Pucher (2009)

Martin Pucher (born February 22, 1956 in Wiener Neustadt ) is a former Austrian banker and football manager .

Commercial bank Mattersburg in Burgenland

Pucher was CEO of the regional bank he founded, Commerzialbank Mattersburg in Burgenland . After the financial market supervisory authority FMA banned the bank from business operations with immediate effect on July 14, 2020 on suspicion of balance sheet falsification, Pucher resigned as its chairman on July 15. According to the first information, the balance sheet of the money house had been tweaked by around 500 million euros (more than half of the stated total assets). Corresponding balances (so-called interbank deposits) of Commerzialbank Mattersburg at other Austrian banks did not exist, the related receipts were falsified. The main part of the amount in question made up alleged balances of 40 to 65 million euros each with several large Austrian banks. In addition, loans were faked in order to be able to simulate interest income. In some cases, loans were opened under the names of real customers of the bank, but in some cases Pucher and a close colleague also selected completely uninvolved people from public directories. Of the 350 million euros in customer loans according to the balance sheet, 180 million euros were forged in this way. Pucher announced that he wanted to cooperate fully with the authorities. After opening the bankruptcy proceedings against the bank, he filed for personal bankruptcy because of the claims for damages directed at him.

Soccer - SV Mattersburg

Pucher has headed the SV Mattersburg football club as chairman since 1988 . Under his leadership and with sponsorship by the Commerzialbank, the club rose from the fifth-rate Burgenland 2nd division middle to the Bundesliga , where it reached third place in 2007. As it turned out in the course of the banking scandal, a large part of the sponsorship was probably "invented" by means of fictitious accounts and by manipulating real contracts in the bank. After the search for a new main sponsor had failed, the club decided to put aside its Bundesliga license and stop playing.

On December 2, 2005, Martin Pucher became interim president of the Austrian Football League and thus successor to Frank Stronach , who had held this office since 1999. On March 1, 2006, he was confirmed in this function by the clubs of the Bundesliga and the First League. In November 2009 he announced that he would not run again for President of the Bundesliga and proposed Hans Rinner , President of SK Sturm Graz , as his successor . The transfer of office took place on December 7, 2009 at the 13th Annual General Meeting.
