Verena Dunst (* 7. February 1958 in Zurich as Verena Mikovits ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ). Since February 28, 2019, she has been the First President of the Burgenland State Parliament .

From 2000 to 2019 she was regional councilor of the Burgenland state government . In the state governments Niessel II and Niessl III , Dunst was regional councilor for families and youth as well as consumer protection and in the state government Niessl IV was responsible for women (until May 8, 2018), families, village renewal and the agricultural sector.

education and profession

Verena Dunst attended primary school in Moschendorf from 1964 to 1968 and then secondary school in Güssing . In 1972 she moved to the Federal College for Economic Professions, where she graduated in 1977. Dunst then graduated from the Eisenstadt Pedagogical Academy , where she passed the teaching examination for secondary schools in 1980 and the teaching examination for the polytechnic course in 1985.

As a result, from 1980 Dunst was a teacher at the Polytechnic School in Güssing and was director of this school from 1998 to 2000.

politics

Dunst started her political career in women's politics. She has been the district chairwoman of the SPÖ Güssing since 1982 and was elected deputy state chairwoman of the SPÖ Burgenland that same year. From 1987 to 1997 she was deputy district party chairwoman of the SPÖ Güssing, and in 1997 she was elected district party leader. Dunst has also been a member of the SPÖ state party executive since 1982 and a member of the state party presidium since 1997.

In addition to her internal party functions, Dunst was also involved in community politics. She was a local councilor in Strem / Moschendorf from 1992 to 1995 and has been a member of the local council of Moschendorf since 1995. Since 1994 she has also been a member of the community council. As early as 1994 she was a member of the National Council for the first time, to which she belonged from December 15, 1994 to January 14, 1996, from March 14, 1996 to February 4, 1997 and from January 1, 1999 to October 28, 1999. In her last tenure as National Councilor, she was a member of the Education Committee and the Health Committee.

After leaving the National Council, she became a member of the Burgenland Landtag in January 2000 . On December 28, 2000, the Landtag elected her to the Burgenland Provincial Government.

At the regional women’s conference on April 21, 2018, Verena Dunst handed over her chairmanship to Astrid Eisenkopf , Dunst was regional women’s chairwoman of the SPÖ Burgenland for eleven years. On May 8, 2018, Dunst also handed over the women's agendas in the Niessl IV state government to Eisenkopf .

On February 28, 2019, she succeeded Christian Illedits as President of the State Parliament .

Private

Dunst is married and has two daughters. She lives in Moschendorf .
