Erwin Preiner (born September 15, 1962 in Vienna ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ). Preiner was a member of the Austrian Federal Council from 2005 to 2010 and its President in 2009 . From 2010 to 2019 Preiner was a member of the National Council . He has been a member of the Burgenland State Parliament since February 17, 2020 .

education and profession

After primary school in Winden am See , Preiner first attended the Neusiedl grammar school , but switched to secondary school after two years. From 1977 to 1981 Preiner attended the upper secondary school in Eisenstadt, which he graduated with a high school diploma. After his military service he studied at the Pedagogical Academy in Eisenstadt to teach German as well as history and social studies . Since he successfully completed his studies in 1985, Preiner has been working as a secondary school teacher at the secondary school in Andau , where he also works as a student and educational advisor. Since 2001 he has been a member of the district school council in the Neusiedl am See district .

Preiner lives in Winden am See.

Political career

Preiner has been a member of the municipal council of his home town of Winden am See since 1992 , and has been the mayor of the municipality since 1997 .

In 1999 Preiner became chairman of the SPÖ education academy in the Neusiedl am See district, and since 2001 he has been a member of the state board of the SPÖ in Burgenland . In the same year he became deputy chairman of the state party control committee of the SPÖ. In October 2005 Preiner moved into the Federal Council for the SPÖ of Burgenland , from July 1, 2009 to December 2009, he was the successor of Harald Reisenberger as president . Preiner saw the focus of his political work in the Federal Council in the areas of education, youth, culture and health.

After Gerhard Steier moved from the National Council to the office of President of the Burgenland State Parliament, Preiner resigned from the Federal Council on June 23, 2010 and succeeded Steier as a member of the National Council on June 28, 2010. In June 2019 it was announced that he would no longer run for the 2019 National Council election.
