The Neusiedl grammar school is a grammar school and secondary school in Neusiedl am See .
location
In the south of Neusiedl am See, the grammar school is located in the immediate vicinity of the reed belt of Lake Neusiedl . In the north, the Bundesschulstrasse delimits the school area. Seestrasse connects to the school grounds in the east. The Neusiedler Middle School is located south of the grammar school.
history
The Neusiedl grammar school was founded on September 6, 1965 as a branch of the BG / BRG / BORG Eisenstadt . The first classes were in the building of the old elementary school (today the music school ). Until the school year 1970/71 there were also classes in the parish hall and in the town hall .
In 1971 the new school building was opened at its current location. On January 1, 1972, the school became independent as the Bundesgymnasium and Bundesrealgymnasium Neusiedl am See.
Due to a lack of space there was a first extension between 1993 and 94. A new building began in 2010 and was completed in autumn 2012.
Architecture and art
architecture
The building from the 1970s was completely renovated and expanded while the school was running according to the architectural designs of the solid architecture and K2architektur working group . The school complex is strictly orthogonally aligned. It consists of three two-story class wings running in north-south direction and a gymnasium wing. Both parts of the building were connected by a single-storey structure running in an east-west direction. The facade design of the class wing is particularly striking in the new building. A lively color scheme gives the entire school complex an identity-creating effect. According to the architects, the color concept refers to the impressive tree population in the schoolyard. The dominant colors of green, beige and white of the school building represent the play of colors of the bark and the leaves of the plane trees (Platanus × acerifolia) .
In 2012, the working group was awarded the Burgenland architecture prize for the renovation and expansion .
art
An art object by Herwig Kempinger called the telephone was installed at the entrance to the school.
Kempinger created the art project from the following lines:
"The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep."
The text is the fourth and last stanza of the popular poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” by the great American poet Robert Frost .
The German-speaking poet and lyric poet Paul Celan translated the stanza as follows:
“Homely, dark, deep the woods that I met.
But not yet redeemed what I promised.
And miles, miles before sleep.
And miles to sleep. "
The American film director Don Siegel refers to this verse in the agent film Telephone from 1977. Sleeper KGB agents are reactivated in the film by a phone call with the text sequence.
Kempinger processes the individual letters of this stanza into aluminum molds and stacks the 98 letters to form a 5 meter high metal stele with a base. The letter sculpture refers on the one hand to the fundamental elements of learning and on the other hand to the task of the school to make the students aware of their talents and inclinations so that they can lead a self-determined life.
