The Kiddy Contest is an Austrian casting show for children between the ages of 8 and 14 (13 years up to 2016), which was organized annually by ORF from 1995 to 2011 . The show has been on the Austrian private broadcaster Puls 4 since 2012 . The format was invented by the music producers Erwin Kiennast and Norman Weichselbaum .
Every year ten children from Germany, Austria and occasionally Switzerland and South Tyrol compete and sing a current pop hit, for which Norman Weichselbaum has written a new German text. The TV audience determines the winner via voting.
Charisma
The 1996 Kiddy Contest took place on a Saturday morning in November 1996. During the Kiddy Contest in 1995 and 1996, the ORF / Confetti TiVi program “Saturday Game” hosted a semifinals over several weeks in which it was possible to vote between two artists for each title.
In 1997 there was a separate kiddy contest semifinal, which was also shown again for five weeks on Saturdays at the Confetti Tivi. It was moderated by Elmer Rossnegger . From 1998 there were no more semifinals on television, the preselection was made by a jury of experts. In 2015, the semi-final shows were broadcast on television again on the two Saturdays before the final. On both days there were ten children singing in a duet, five of them make it to the final.
In addition to being broadcast on ORF 1, the Kiddy Contest has also been broadcast a number of times on German television and can therefore also be freely received across Europe via the Astra 1 satellite. In the years 2000 to 2002, the ZDF was involved in the show as a co-organizer, which means that half of the participants came from Germany and the show was shown on ZDF at the same time. In 2001 and 2002 it was also broadcast in KiKA . After 2002, the ZDF decided not to take part anymore, which made the Kiddy Contest 2003 a purely Austrian production again.
In 2004, ORF found a new partner again, this time it was the German private broadcaster Super RTL . Nothing changed in the transmission scheme. The cooperation with Super RTL lasted until 2006.
The Kiddy Contest 2007 was again just a single production by ORF. The previous specials in the lunchtime program were replaced by the series “Kiddy Contest - Das Camp”, which was broadcast over several days in the afternoon program of ORF 1. The series documented the stay of the participants in the Kiddy Contest 2007 at Schloss Hof in Lower Austria.
In 2008 the Kiddy Contest was shown again on ORF 1 and Super RTL. The final took place on November 1st, 2008 at 8:15 pm. The moderator was again Mirjam Weichselbraun .
The Kiddy Contest 2009 was recorded on October 31st in the Austria Center Vienna in front of 4,500 fans and broadcast one week later, on November 7th, at 4:45 pm on ORF 1. For the German fan base, the children's channel Nickelodeon broadcast the show one day later. The show was moderated by Benny Hörtnagl , with Daniel Schuhmacher and Mandy Capristo from Monrose as the star guests .
In 2010 the Kiddy Contest with the new presenter Kati Bellowitsch was broadcast live on ORF 1 again, Nickelodeon showed a 60-minute summary a week later.
For the years 2012 to 2015, the private broadcaster Puls 4 secured the rights to the broadcast. The show has been moderated by Silvia Schneider since 2015 . Since 2015, the program has also been broadcast via live stream on the Internet and in the Puls 4 app. Alamande Belfor has been responsible for the choreography since 2017 .
In 2020 the Kiddy Contest was canceled due to the corona pandemic .
