O-Zone is a Moldovan - Romanian boy band .

Career

The first line-up consisted of Dan Bălan and Petru Jelihovschi. In 1998 a casting was held in Chișinău to form a Moldovan boy band.

After first appearances in their Moldovan homeland, the Romanian record label Cat Music became aware of the three friends in 2002 . They got a record deal and in the summer of 2002 their first single Numai Tu was released . The song became a whirlwind and immediately reached number 1 on the Romanian charts. With their second single Despre Tine , O-Zone were able to repeat this success and the 2002 album Number 1 also sold well.

In summer 2003, the band's second album, DiscO-Zone, was released . It became the best-selling dance album of the year in Romania . The first single from the album was Dragostea din tei , initially only a hit in Romania.

In February 2004 Italian producers became aware of the song and produced a cover version of Dragostea din tei with the Romanian singer Haiducii without the consent of O-Zone . This recording stormed the Italian charts and was number 1 on the dance charts for six weeks alone. As a penalty for the unauthorized cover, Haiducii had to pay the equivalent of 10,000 euros.

Then the Italian record company Time Records contacted O-Zone, gave them a one-year recording contract and released their original version in several European countries. After top positions in Spain , Italy , France , Belgium and the Czech Republic , O-Zone reached the top of the German single charts on June 7, 2004 . There remained Dragostea din tei for 14 weeks and was the largest number-one hit of the year 2004. On 20 June 2004, the song was also in (13 weeks) Austria and Switzerland (14 weeks) number one.

In addition, the song made Gary Brolsma famous overnight as the soundtrack for his playback video published on YouTube ("the Numa Numa Guy"). His contribution sparked a veritable flood of imitators and made the playback video genre a major trend in the early years of the web video platform.

For Dragostea din tei the three Moldovans were awarded the Echo for the best rock / pop single in April 2005 . Soon after, the band broke up and the members began solo careers.

On May 9, 2017, the group reunited. They played 2 concerts on the occasion of Europe Day in Chisinau and Bucharest. After that, the 3 members did not rule out the possibility of continuing to publish music together under the O-Zone project in the future.
