Emergence

Whataya Want from Me was originally written and recorded for Pink's fifth album, Funhouse , but it didn't make it onto the album. On November 18, 2009 Adam Lambert announced on his website that the second single from the debut album Whataya Want from Me will be released. This announced the second single before the CD was released.

The release was followed by an extensive promotional campaign in which the song was featured on many major American television shows, including the Late Show with David Letterman on November 25, 2009, The Ellen DeGeneres Show on December 1, the Tonight Show with Conan O. 'Brien on December 14th and The Jay Leno Show on December 21st of that year. On January 20, 2010 an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show followed . In April and May 2010 the song was promoted internationally, for example in Finland , Great Britain , Switzerland and Germany . It was recorded by Max Martin and Shellback at Maratone Studios, Stockholm ( Sweden ); with Al Clay at House Of Blues Studios, Los Angeles , CA; by Ann Mincieli at German Studios, NYC. Assisted by Chris Galland and Doug Tyo (House of Blues); with Christian Baker (German studio). Mixed by Serban Ghenea at MixStar Studios, Virginia Beach VA. Developed for the Mix John Hanes; Mix assistant was Tim Roberts. The remix (Fonerellli's New Romantic Club Remix) was developed by Aaron McClennand for Mena Musik.

Music video

The music video was shot by choreographer and music video director Diane Martel on December 20, 2009. It first ran on January 15, 2010 on VH1 . The video shows Lambert being harassed by a cameraman. Actor-played paparazzi follow him outside of a nightclub to his car. In other scenes he plays with his band.

reception

In the Billboard Hot 100 rose Whataya Want from Me a week from January 2 of 2010. After Lambert's work as a mentor for the ninth season contestants of American Idol , the song reached tenth place. In the US, the single was sold over two million times, making it For Your Entertainment's most successful single . Whataya Want from Me was ranked third on the Canadian Hot 100 .

In Germany, Whataya Want from Me reached number five in the single charts and was in the top 10 for six weeks and in the charts for 29 weeks. Lambert reached the single charts in Germany for the first time. To date, no single by Lambert has been able to place higher or longer in the German charts. In 2010 Whataya Want from Me took third place in the annual charts in the German airplay charts behind Fireflies ( Owl City ) and I Like ( Keri Hilson ) , making it the third most played radio hit of the year. In the annual charts of the German single charts, the single was ranked 40th.

The song was recorded differently. Jonathan Keefe of Slant Magazine praised the song, calling it a "phenomenally well-made pop single that gives Lambert the chance to shine." In the Houston Chronicle , Joey Guerra wrote that the song was the most "forward" or "straightforward" on the CD “(“ Straightforward ”), he didn't call it bad. Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune disliked the piece and called it "tearful".
