history

The Houston Chronicle was founded in 1901 by Marcellus E. Foster, a former reporter for the now-defunct Houston Post . The first issue appeared on October 14, 1901, and sold for two cents apiece, at a time when most newspapers were selling for five cents apiece. At the end of the first month, the Chronicle had a circulation of 4,378 - about one-tenth the population of Houston at the time. Within the first year she acquired the Daily Herald .

In 1911, editor George Kepple started the Goodfellows program . He circulated a hat among his reporters on Christmas Eve and raised money to buy toys for a shoeshine boy . Goodfellows has now grown into a citywide program providing toys to children in need between the ages of two and ten. It is supported by donations from the newspaper and its readers. In 2003, Goodfellows distributed nearly 250,000 toys to more than 100,000 children in need in the Greater Houston Area .

In 1926, Jesse H. Jones became the sole owner of the newspaper. Finally, on May 1, 1987, Hearst Corporation bought the Chronicle for $ 415 million. Since 1994 the Chronicle has only had a morning edition. When the Houston Post closed the following year, the Chronicle became Houston's only major daily newspaper.
