Episode structure

Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City

Earlier shows began with a teaser that Letterman played alongside a celebrity. This custom was reintroduced in the summer of 2006.

The opening credits consisted of some recordings from New York City and the show band that played the theme music. Then announcer Alan Kalter announced the guests of the show, Paul Shaffer and lastly David Letterman.

The first typical part of the late night show , the monologue , mostly related to current events from pop culture and politics. After the current top ten list and a few running gags , the talk part began, in which interviews with two to three guests were conducted. In between, musicians or stand-up comedians often appeared.

Regular skits

The Late Show was known for its repeatedly absurd contributions, often in the form of competitions or audience contributions. The attraction was that the posts were actually pointless, but were taken very seriously by Letterman and everyone involved.
