Sandra Carla de Lopes Morato e Leal Pires (born August 26, 1969 in Dili , Portuguese Timor ) is a Portuguese - Austrian singer .

Life

Born in Portuguese Timor, where her father worked as a football coach, Sandra Pires grew up with her grandparents in Portugal . At the age of 13, she moved to live with her parents and three siblings in Australia , where they had fled the civil war in East Timor . During a vacation in Europe, she performed spontaneously during a jam session in Vienna , whereupon the owner of the club hired her for further performances.

She stayed in Vienna, married the sound engineer Bernhard Schedelberger and started a family. Their daughter was born in 2002. The album Songs for Lea , recorded during pregnancy, is dedicated to her. Schedelberger and Pires separated in 2007, the divorce took place in November 2010.

Singing career

At the age of 15 she won the most important Australian singing competition and then sang in the band of Eroll Budell when she was 16 . Since 1992 she has performed numerous concerts accompanied by Erwin Kiennast on the piano. As a result, she was offered a recording contract with BMG and in 1998 her first album Sandra Pires was released .

Pires has worked with several well-known artists, including Eros Ramazzotti , Trevor Horn , Wet Wet Wet and Lisa Stansfield . In 1999 she played a leading role in the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in Amstetten . In 2000 she received the Amadeus Austrian Music Award in the category “Artist Pop / Rock national”. Pires has been on stage as Maria Trapp in The Sound of Music at the Volksoper Vienna since 2005 .

On November 21, 2006, the album Destino was released with live recordings of songs in Portuguese.

At the end of September 2007, Pires traveled to East Timor for the first time since childhood . Together with the Austrian musician Franz Alexander Langer , she gave three concerts in front of 6,800 visitors (two in Dili, one in Baucau ), which were also broadcast on television. She sang pieces from her Destino program, which Langer adapted for the occasion for piano accompaniment, in Portuguese and Tetum as well as songs from the Sound of Music in English and German.

In Vienna, the Pires was on stage in the Museumsquartier as Maria in the musical Jesus Christ Superstar . She then played Nellie Forbush in the musical South Pacific at the Volksoper in Vienna for two seasons alongside Ferruccio Furlanetto . In 2013 a new engagement followed as Maria Trapp in The Sound of Music . From 2014 to 2016 she took on the role of the bird woman in the musical Mary Poppins at the Ronacher in Vienna .

At the end of 2017 Pires presented together with Conchita , Maya Hakvoort and Nazide Aylin the sold out program “The Music of James Bond” in the Konzerthaus in Vienna.

In 2018, Sandra Pires was commissioned by the organizing committee of the UCI Road World Championships in Innsbruck / Tyrol to compose and sing the official song for the cycling world championships. The title Top of the World was published in July 2018.

Movie and TV

She had appearances in various television programs and in 2002 she played the leading role in Reinhard Schwabenitzky’s film My Sister - The Beast , for which she contributed four songs to the soundtrack.
