biography

As a singer

Lisa Stansfield was born in Heywood, Lancashire (now Greater Manchester) in 1966. Her parents moved to the nearby town of Rochdale shortly after she was born , where she grew up. At the age of fourteen she won a talent competition and was allowed to host the children's show Razzamatazz on British television. Together with her old school friends Ian Devaney and Andy Morris, she then founded a band in 1983, which received their first record deal in 1985 and henceforth called the Blue Zone. With their music, which was strongly influenced by soul and R 'n' B , the band had only moderate success (with the single Jackie ). The producer duo Coldcut invited Blue Zone to record People Hold On . For the further cooperation, the three decided that from now on Stansfield should be in the spotlight. The recording became a club hit, and Stansfield's expressive voice caught the attention of the record company Big Life Records, a subsidiary of Arista / BMG , so that Stansfield was awarded a recording contract under her birth name. Devaney and Morris continued to be part of the singer's team as musicians, composers and producers.

After This Is the Right Time (1989), her first solo single, Lisa Stansfield became internationally known as a singer with All Around the World (1989) and the subsequent album Affection (1989). All Around the World is her biggest hit to date, with which she not only reached number 1 in Great Britain and the first white singer ever on the Billboard R&B charts, but also reached the top 10 in the USA and Germany. For this song she also received the Ivor Novello Award as songwriter alongside Ian Devaney and Andy Morris for "Best Contemporary Song" in 1990 and "Best International Song" in 1991. With Live Together (1990), her debut album, the sold five million copies worldwide, another UK top 10 hit. In 1991, Ringo Starr gave her the World Music Award for "Best Selling British Artist". After her breakthrough, Stansfield was honored with a BRIT Award for Best British Young Artist. In 1991 and 1992 the Englishwoman received this award for best national female solo artist. She sang for the first time in 1991 on the Red Hot + Blue album alongside stars like U2 , Annie Lennox , Tom Waits and others. v. a. a Cole Porter song ( Down in the Depths ) in aid of AIDS aid.

Her second album Real Love (1991) fell short of sales expectations worldwide. In the British single charts, however, they were able to place other hits, including Change (1991) and Time to Make You Mine (1992). She set a new record with the single All Woman : she was number 1 on the Billboard R&B charts for the third time. This was followed by the hit single Someday (I'm Coming Back) (1992) from the soundtrack for the film Bodyguard with Whitney Houston in the lead role, the most successful soundtrack of all time with sales of almost 30 million units.

On April 20, 1992 Lisa Stansfield took part in the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert at London's Wembley Stadium in honor of the singer Freddie Mercury who died of AIDS . Based on the original music video , she presented I Want to Break Free in hair curlers as a soloist and entered the stage with a vacuum cleaner. Together with George Michael and the rest of the members of Queen , she sang the title These Are the Days of Our Lives . This song was released in 1993 on the Five Live EP , which stayed at number 1 on the UK charts for several weeks - the proceeds went to the Mercury Phoenix Trust .

Lisa Stansfield stayed true to her disco and soul pop style throughout the 1990s and released In All the Right Places in 1993 , the pre-single from the album So Natural and a contribution to the soundtrack of the film An Immoral Offer . Although their third studio album made it to the top of the UK Top 10, Arista did not release their album in America. So Natural is still something special for Stansfield himself because it was the first album for which the lovers Devaney / Stansfield were responsible.

In 1997, their first self-titled album followed, which made it to number 2 on the British album charts. Lisa Stansfield contained the top 10 hit The Real Thing and a bootleg mix of her classic People Hold on , which, mixed by The Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, was a hit even before the album was released. The second single was Never Never Gonna Give You Up , a cover version of the song of the same name by Barry White , with whom she sang her hit single All around the world in a duet in 1992 . Also worth mentioning is the video in which the singer strolls through one of the most popular market streets in London ( Portobello Road ), apparently naked (on a market day).

With the romantic comedy Swing Stansfield made her debut on the big screen in 1999. She received critical acclaim for her performance in the film, which tells the story of a swing band from Liverpool. Stansfield and Devaney produced the Swing soundtrack , contributed a few of their own swing compositions and landed in the top ten of the US Top Jazz Charts with the album.

With the exception of her greatest hits collection Biography (2003), which made it to number 3 in the British album charts, Lisa Stansfield has not had any notable chart successes in her home country since 1997. Their last regular studio album for BMG Face Up (2001) only stayed in the British album charts for four weeks due to a lack of promotion. The single Let's Just Call It Love , which was extracted from it, was also only at the bottom of the charts, and the second single 8-3-1 could no longer be placed.

After switching to ZTT Records , their sixth studio album, The Moment (2004), barely made it into the UK charts, although the previously extremely successful Trevor Horn produced all the tracks on the album. In Germany, however, The Moment was only released on Edel Records in February 2005 , became a Top 20 success and stayed in the Top 100 into the summer. The first single Treat Me Like a Woman - a 3rd place in Germany Airplaycharts - became their biggest hit in Germany and Austria since the early 90s. The second single If I Hadn't Got You also became a veritable radio hit that made it to number 5 on the airplay charts. In the summer of 2005, the Englishwoman presented herself to the German audience with new songs and classics at several concerts. At the end of 2005, Stansfield received the Women's World Award as “World Artist 2005” from Mikhail Sergejewitsch Gorbachev . At the same time, He Touches Me, the third and final single from the album, was released, but it was not successful in the single charts or in the airplay charts.

In June 2012, Stansfield directed the film Northern Soul , which was released on October 17, 2014. Meanwhile she was preparing her musical comeback. In autumn 2012 she gave several concerts in clubs in London and Manchester. In May and June 2013 Lisa Stansfield toured France, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and England. Her album Seven was released on January 31, 2014, followed by a Germany tour in May 2014 (Frankfurt, Hamburg, Bremen, Cologne, Munich, Stuttgart, Mannheim, Berlin). The first single Can't Dance was broadcast on Radio BBC 2 as a world exclusive.

In the spring of 2018, the album Deeper was released , which immediately reached the top 10 in Germany. It was the first time since 1991 that it reached the top 10 German albums. At the same time as the release, Stansfield went on a European tour. The collaboration with the director John Carpenter caused a sensation , the piece Hercules names him as a composer. In fact, Hercules is based on the soundtrack of Schlag bei Nacht by John Carpenter, he is also entitled to half of all income.

As an actress

In recent years, after the previously rejected offer to Four Weddings and a Death , Stansfield resumed her acting ambitions on the following projects:

Private

In 1987 Stansfield had a four-month short marriage with the Italian designer Augusto Grassi. In 1998 she married her teammate Ian Devaney, with whom she had been in a relationship for ten years. An artificial insemination was unsuccessful, Stanfield stated to have been after that happy about it.
