BMG Music Publishing was a 100% subsidiary of Bertelsmann and was responsible for the music publishing business ( copyright management ) in the BMG division. The company, based in New York City , was taken over in 2007 by Universal Music , a subsidiary of Vivendi media group.
history
The company was founded in 1987 and has become one of the fastest growing music publishers. In 2002 Zomba Music Publishing was taken over.
After rumors of a sale in the course of 2006, and the sales process officially started in mid-June, Bertelsmann announced on September 6, 2006 that BMG Music Publishing would be sold to Vivendi for € 1.63 billion . The original approval of the merger by the EU Commission was declared null and void by the European Court of First Instance (EuGeI) in September . After a renewed examination, the EU Commission decided in May 2007 that the Vivendi subsidiary Universal Music may take over BMG Music Publishing under certain conditions. The EU competition commissioner Neelie Kroes explained that Universal has to sell various music catalogs in order to exclude competitive disadvantages for customers in the European economic area. These sales also affect copyright agreements with successful artists such as the Kaiser Chiefs or Justin Timberlake .
Before the sale, BMG Music Publishing was the third largest music publisher in the world and employed around 550 people. In charge of the music business division BMG Bertelsmann BMG Music Publishing about 17.5% of sales generated. BMG Music Publishing held the rights to more than one million songs.
