Coldplay is a British pop-rock - band consisting of Chris Martin , Jonny Buckland , Will Champion and Guy Berryman . It is one of the world's most successful bands of the 2000s. The band has sold almost 80 million records worldwide, including 50 million albums.

Band history

Foundation and first years (1996–1999)

Martin, Berryman, Buckland and Champion met as students at University College London and formed a band in September 1996. Martin studied Ancient History , Buckland Mathematics , Astrophysics and Astronomy and Champion Anthropology . Berryman first studied engineering and later architecture . In contrast to all other band members, he did not graduate.

Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland, who met during orientation week at college, were the first members of the band. They first played in a band called "Pectoralz" until Guy Berryman, a classmate of the two, joined them. Originally the four members founded the band under the name "Starfish" (German: "Seestern"). Under this name the band played a few concerts in smaller clubs in Camden. Phil Harvey , a fellow student and friend of Chris Martin, was hired as a manager, is now the artistic director and is seen as the fifth member.

The Safety EP was released in March 1998 , of which only 500 were made. This served mostly as a demo, only 50 records went on the official sale. The EP is therefore a rarity and is very popular among collectors. Coldplay was then signed by the small independent label Fierce Panda Records . The first release was the Brothers and Sisters EP , which was recorded in February 1999 in just four days.

In the spring of 1999 Coldplay signed a five-album deal with Parlophone , where the band is still under contract to this day. After their first appearance at Glastonbury Festival , the band went into the studio to record their third EP, The Blue Room , which went on sale in October 5,000. During the production there were quarrels within the band, as a result of which Martin was initially kicked out of the band, but was brought back shortly afterwards. To avoid further trouble, the four decided to introduce rules within the band: 1. Profits are shared, 2. Drug use leads to exclusion from the band.

Commercial breakthrough (2000-2006)

Coldplay performing in the USA (2005)

The first album Parachutes was immediately a commercial success and was also highly praised by the critics . Parachutes was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize (2000) and won the 2001 Grammy Award for "Best Alternative Music Album" . In total, the album has been sold over nine million times worldwide to date. In the UK , it stayed in the top ten for 33 weeks. The band made a name for themselves with this LP and was often compared to the English band Radiohead .

The second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, from 2002 was more complex - now increasingly with rock elements - and more intellectual than the debut album , but this did not detract from the success and also convinced the critics. The album received two Grammys , in the categories " Best Alternative Album " and "Best Song" for In My Place. In addition, the work was number one in the German and British album charts. In the United States , it reached fifth place. With this album, the band members far exceeded the success of their debut with over 13 million units sold.

With X&Y , their third studio album , Coldplay built on the success of their first two albums. With 8.3 million records sold, it became the world's best-selling album of 2005. To date, over eleven million copies have been sold. But the musicians also landed a huge hit worldwide with their first single, Speed of Sound . The band was able to place itself in the top ten of the US Billboard charts and the top 20 of the German music charts and won the MTV Europe Music Award 2005 in the “Best Song” category for the title Speed of Sound. In the UK, Coldplay stayed at number one on the charts in June 2005 after the first commercial single release of a ringtone ( Crazy Frog ) . All while maintaining Speed of Sound more notoriety as the official theme song of the ZDF for the Confederations Cup 2005 . On the album X&Y there is also an adaptation of the song Computer Love by the Düsseldorf electronic pioneers Kraftwerk, the track Talk .

On July 2, 2005, Coldplay performed at the Live 8 concert in London . In addition to their own songs In My Place and Fix You , the musicians played Bitter Sweet Symphony from The Verve with Richard Ashcroft .

Work with Brian Eno (since 2007)

For the fourth album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends , the co-producer Brian Eno was specially used, who gave massive support to the band, which was already thinking of breaking up. The album was released in Germany on June 13, 2008. Since June 6, it has been available for prelistening on Coldplay's MySpace page.

Coldplay live in London (2008)

All the songs on the record are different from the band's earlier songs, so the style can hardly be compared to the previous albums. With Chinese Sleep Chant and The Escapist there are two hidden tracks on the album . On April 29th, Violet Hill was released as a lead single for free download before it went on sale on May 9th, 2008 in Germany.

Freedom leads the people , a painting from 1830 by Eugène Delacroix, is used for the cover of the album . The painting illustrates the prevailing striving for liberalism and freedom of the population at the time and depicts the street battles of the July Revolution , when citizens prevailed against the absolutist rule of Charles X despite heavy losses in the struggle for freedom and a say . The words “Viva la Vida” were placed on the album about Freedom Leads the People .

The album again became a huge hit for the band. Not only did it conquer number 1 in the charts in numerous countries, with the single Viva la Vida she also made it to the top of the singles charts in Great Britain and the USA for the first time. With the success, she was also a favorite at the 2009 Grammy Awards . She ended up winning three Grammys out of seven nominations. Her single Viva la Vida was recognized as “best song” and “best pop performance of a group”, while her album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends was recognized as “best rock album”. In August 2008, Coldplay released a second music video for the song in honor of Anton Corbijn and Depeche Mode . The music video pays homage to the music video for the song Enjoy the Silence .

On June 16, 2008, the band started their Viva-la-Vida tour in London . As part of the world tour, the band played in Great Britain, the USA, Canada, Japan, France, Spain, Germany (Mannheim, Cologne, Hamburg, Berlin, Munich), Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium. It ended on February 15, 2009 in Osaka (Japan). In 2009 the Viva La Vida tour was expanded to include stadium concerts, and a number of additional concerts took place, including in Hanover, Düsseldorf and Munich.

In December 2008 the New York guitarist Joe Satriani sued the band, claiming that the song Viva la Vida contained chord progressions, harmonies and dynamics from his 2004 piece If I Could Fly (Is There Love in Space?) . In September 2009, the parties reached an out of court settlement .

In 2010, musician Sammie Lee Smith made plagiarism allegations against the band. They used his songs Yellow , Trouble and Clocks illegally. The trial is being conducted in Los Angeles .

On December 1, 2010 a new single with Christmas Lights was released.

On June 3, 2011, Coldplay performed at the German music festival Rock im Park and presented their new single Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall (The single was released on June 5, 2011) and the songs Us Against the World , Hurts Like Heaven , Major Minus and Charlie Brown .

Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall is inspired by Peter Allen's I Go to Rio , which served as the template for the 1990s summer hit by Verona Pooth aka Chocolate (produced by DJ Alex Christensen ), which won a gold record . Earlier interviews with the band said that Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall will appear on their fifth studio album.

The EP Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall was released on June 26th 2011 as CD and 7 ″ vinyl version with the additional new song Major Minus . The “Digital Bundle Version”, which could be pre-ordered in the iTunes Store, also contains the song Moving to Mars .

On August 12, 2011, the fifth album was officially confirmed. Mylo Xyloto was published in Germany on October 21, 2011. For Great Britain, October 24, 2011 was specified as the release date.

On September 19, 2011, the band announced a European tour with three concerts in Germany. A few days earlier, the second single from the new album, Paradise , was released, the intro of which is inspired by the earlier Roxette single Wish I could fly and immediately sparked new rumors of plagiarism.

The dates of the European tour were announced in December 2011. It led to football stadiums in Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, the Czech Republic, Sweden, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

As part of the reporting on the Hanover concert on September 22, 2012, the NDR protested together with professional associations in a picture boycott , since the management of the band had asked every press photographer to “sign an unacceptable contract”. The contract provided for extensive decision-making and royalty-free exploitation rights for management over the recordings made by professional photographers.

On November 16, 2012 her third live album was released, entitled Live 2012, which was recorded as part of the Mylo Xyloto tour. At the same time, the live recording was released on DVD and Blu-Ray edition. The album reached number 3 in the German charts. Their tour was the third most successful tour of 2012 with a grossed amount of 130 million euros.

Mylo Xyloto has sold more than 8 million times worldwide.

In late August 2013, Coldplay announced that their new song Atlas would serve as the official soundtrack for the sequel to The Hunger Games , The Hunger Games . On September 6, 2013 the song was released worldwide. In the UK it appeared two days later.

On February 25, 2014, Coldplay released the song Midnight as a video premiere in Germany exclusively on Spiegel-Online. A few days later, on March 3, 2014, Coldplay announced that it would release their sixth studio album on May 16, 2014, called Ghost Stories . The song Midnight is also on this album, as is the first single, Magic , released on March 3rd , in whose video Zhang Ziyi plays the female lead.

On May 2, 2014, the song A Sky Full of Stars was released as the next single. The song was created in collaboration with the Swedish house DJ Avicii . It mainly contains elements of dance music . After just a few hours, the song was number one on the German iTunes charts.

For the release of their new album Ghost Stories , the band will play six shows between April and July, including one at the E-Werk in Cologne .

On December 4, 2014, Chris Martin announced in an interview with BBC Radio 1 that work on the seventh studio album had long since begun. In another interview, he indicated that A Head Full of Dreams could be the band's final album.

"It's our seventh thing and the way we look at it it's like the last Harry Potter book. That's not to say there won't be another thing one day, but this is the completion of something. ... I have to think of it as the final thing we're doing, otherwise we wouldn't put everything into it. "

“It's our seventh thing, and we see it a bit like the last Harry Potter book. It doesn't mean that there won't be something again at some point, but it is a kind of completion. ... I can only imagine it as our final thing, otherwise we wouldn't give everything for the album. "

The album was released on December 4th, 2015. Almost a month before that, the album's first single was released on November 6th. It is entitled Adventure of a Lifetime . Before the official announcement, there were various posters in London pointing to the album.

On February 7, 2016, Coldplay sang on the halftime show at the 50th NFL Super Bowl .

style

The band was very much influenced by the Scottish band Travis . Chris Martin said in an interview that his band probably never would have existed without Travis. The songwriting , especially the older material, was very much influenced by Jeff Buckley , whom many musicians refer to as a source of inspiration when it comes to songwriting. The more recent pieces, however, tend towards Travis and U2 . But also Echo and the Bunnymen , whose singer Ian McCulloch Chris Martin is close friends, as well as ex-Beatle George Harrison and the Norwegian pop band a-ha had an influence on the musical career of the band.

Solo projects

Together with the a-ha guitarist and keyboardist Magne Furuholmen and two other musicians, Berryman founded the supergroup Apparatjik in 2008 .
