Background and story

Since 1958, the Grammy Awards (actually Grammophone Awards) have been presented annually in numerous categories by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) in the United States of America to recognize artistic achievement, technical competence and excellent overall performance regardless of album Honor sales or chart position.

The Icelandic singer Björk was nominated seven times, but never won the award.

The Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album was first given in 1991 to honor music albums that move outside the musical mainstream and are "heavily played on college radio stations" upon nomination vocal and instrumental albums of alternative music are taken into account, which contain at least 51% newly recorded material; "Alternative" is a "non-traditional genre outside the mainstream consciousness" (" non-traditional form that exist (at least initially) outside of the mainstream music consciousness. ") And includes productions from the areas of rock, pop, R&B , Dance, folk and classical music (“ Its avant-garde approach may utilize new technology or new production techniques and contain elements of rock, pop, R&B, dance, folk, or even classical musical styles. ”).

In 1991 and from 1994 to 1999 the award was named Best Alternative Music Performance . Since 2001, the award recipients have included not only the artists but also the producers and sound engineers and mixers.

Until 2010, the bands Radiohead and The White Stripes shared the record for the most frequent awards, each with three awards in this category. Radiohead singer Thom Yorke was also nominated in 2007 for his solo album The Eraser . Beck and Coldplay have each received the award twice, the latter for two consecutive years. American artists received the award most frequently, British artists received it five times, Irish artists twice, and it went once each to Australian and French artists. The Icelandic artist Björk holds the record for the most nominations without distinction, she was nominated seven times from 1996 to 2016.
