The Alabama Shakes are an American rock band that moves stylistically between southern rock and blues . The band was founded in Athens , Alabama in 2009 by singer Brittany Howard and bassist Zac Cockrell. Later guitarist Heath Fogg and drummer Steve Johnson joined them.
In September 2011 the band released the EP Alabama Shakes with four songs. Shortly thereafter, Alabama Shakes was named to MTV's list of eleven bands to watch in 2012.
In November 2011 the band signed a contract with Rough Trade Records in the UK and ATO Records in the United States. The first full album was released on April 6, 2012 with Boys & Girls .
Alabama Shakes entitled Always Alright are featured on the soundtrack of the US tragic comedy Silver Linings from 2012 . On April 21, 2015, the second studio album Sound & Color was released on Rough Trade .
