action

Pat Solitano Jr. is discharged from a clinic where he spent eight months due to manic depressive disorder . He was admitted because he surprised his wife Nikki while cheating and beat up her lover. He then moves back in with his parents, tries to win Nikki back, but is no longer allowed to have contact with her due to a court order.

When his friend Ronnie and his wife Veronica invite him to dinner, he appears in a Philadelphia Eagles jersey instead of wearing a suit . There he meets the emotionally unstable Tiffany, who lost her job after the death of her husband. Tiffany throws herself into one affair after another and offers Pat sex on the first evening , which Pat refuses with reference to his marriage. After she watches him jog and follows him several times in the morning, a complicated friendship develops between the two of them, which Pat sees as an opportunity to get in touch with Nikki: Tiffany agrees to hand Nikki a letter if, in return, he is at a dance competition with her participates. Despite initial concerns, Pat agrees to demonstrate to Nikki that he has changed and is now reliable. During the two weeks of training, Tiffany hands him what appears to be a reply from Nikki suggesting a chance for reconciliation.

Pat's superstitious father Patrizio plans to open a restaurant and tries his hand at bookmaking to raise the capital. Because he thinks his son is a lucky charm, he sends Pat to an important Philadelphia Eagles football game on which he has wagered all of his savings. Pat skipped the dance training with Tiffany that had actually been promised to go to the game, but was innocently involved in a fight in front of the stadium and the Eagles also lost the game. In the evening the situation at home escalates when his father, Pat, accuses him of it. Then suddenly Tiffany shows up angry because of the missed training session, but explains soothingly to the angry father that the Eagles always won when Pat was with her. Pat Sr. then proposes a double bet to his betting partner: If both the Eagles won the game against the Cowboys and Pat and Tiffany managed at least five out of ten points in the dance competition, he would get the lost money back doubled. Since Pat no longer wants to participate in the competition under this pressure, Tiffany and his father claim that his wife Nikki would also be in the audience on the evening of the screening, whereupon the latter draws new hope and agrees to the deal. When Pat accidentally reread the alleged letter from Nikki, he realizes that it was actually written by Tiffany.

At the dance competition, Tiffany is surprised to find that Nikki has actually appeared. Angry about this, having developed strong feelings for Pat over time, Tiffany wants to get drunk on vodka at the bar . Pat finds the slightly tipsy Tiffany just seconds before they appear together; nevertheless, the two step on the floor. Meanwhile, the Eagles win, and eventually Pat and Tiffany get exactly five (5.0) points. After the dance, Pat goes to Nikki to talk to her. Angry and disappointed, Tiffany then flees from the event. However, Pat catches up with her on the street and - to her surprise - confesses his love for her.

In the final scene you can see the participants gathered together in Pat's parents' house on Sunday and Pat explains from the off that Sunday is now his favorite day again.

Reviews

Leading actor Bradley Cooper at the launch of the film at the Toronto International Film Festival

The film received mostly positive reviews. The lexicon of international film sees it as a “weird romantic comedy” that “expands into a ludicrous panorama of a US suburban world full of peculiarities, which is about family, love affairs and new beginnings”. Die Zeit describes it as "one of the most original romantic comedies of recent years", "in which the strictly regulated genre is thoroughly shaken."

On the other hand, critic.de complains that “the great potential of Silver Linings […] remains hidden”, because the makers did not dare to “break out of the familiar.” Also epd-film.de writes that “Russell the depicted lower -Middle-class milieu [...] viewed without any unmasking rage. "

The acting performance was particularly emphasized. For example, kino7.de wrote, "the acting ensemble really knows how to impress in every minute of the film."

The film was a huge commercial success. It had a production cost of $ 21 million and grossed around $ 236 million.
