action

In a small town in Indiana, Alice works as a waitress on roller skates. Her boyfriend Scott, a state trooper, takes her out to a romantic dinner one evening, where he proposes marriage to her. Shortly after the application, a craftsman in the restaurant has a mishap, he drops his nail gun, a nail comes loose and hits Alice in the head. She is taken to a hospital where the nail is to be removed immediately. The operation is stopped when it is discovered that Alice has no health insurance and cannot afford the expensive operation.

The plan to raise enough money for Alice's operation by means of a fundraising campaign fails, and she is fired from her job because of her uncontrolled behavior. Aunt Rita, who is actually a veterinarian, tries to surgically remove the nail from Alice's head at home. The attempt fails and an aggressive episode is triggered in Alice, in which she argues with Scott, who then breaks the engagement.

Three weeks later, Alice saw a television ad by Congressman Howard Birdwell offering his help to the citizens. Together with her friends Pastor Norm and Keyshawn, Alice drives to Washington to see Howard. After being hit on the head, Alice's behavior changes, she takes on nymphomaniac traits and has sex with Howard. When she tells him her story, he promises to help her achieve a change in the health law if in return she helps him with a law to establish a lunar base. Alice tells her story on television and promotes the lunar base at the same time. The next day, Alice realizes that the change in the law she is aiming for in the healthcare system is not getting any response.

When Congress spokesman Buck McCoy chokes on a nut cookie, Alice and Howard try to revive it, but the attempt fails. At the funeral service, Alice accuses Howard of using her only for his own purposes. She takes the floor in front of all the mourners and gives a funeral speech in which she draws attention to her predicament again in a dramatic way. She claims that the deceased wanted to invest in the new health law instead of investing in the lunar base. After this lie, Alice and Howard reconcile, but he disappears.

Scott visits Alice in Washington to get her to return home with him. He promises to track down Howard, along with his fellow state trooper, so that he can help her introduce the new health law to Congress.

Howard returns to Washington and stands before Congress as a now independent MP to introduce the new bill. To discredit him, however, he is confronted by the new congressional spokeswoman Hendrickson with allegations of sexual harassment from his past. Although Alice stands up for him and gives a fiery speech to Congress, the new health law fails in the subsequent vote. Alice becomes faint and collapses. Howard rejoins his previous party and MP Hendrickson. Alice feels betrayed and decides to leave Washington.

The next day it turns out that Howard managed to secretly get the new law through. On TV he confesses his love to Alice and they make up again.

background

The film is based on the novel And what do you dream of at night? the writer Kristin Gore . The original film title is in the original "Nailed".

The filming started in 2008, after mainly financial difficulties during the production the director David O. Russell withdrew from the film project in 2010. The film was only released by the film studio in 2015, and it is marketed under the director's pseudonym "Stephen Greene". Russell himself distances himself from this film and does not count it among his official work. The film has been available on DVD in Germany since July 28, 2016.

criticism

Thomas Groh on Kino-zeit.de calls the film a "curiosity" with regard to the production history around director Russell, the film is "glaringly overdriven and satirically drastically exaggerated". Contrary to the majority of US critics, Groh also finds conciliatory tones in his conclusion: "[...] as an anarchic comedy, the film is by no means without its charm, on the contrary, over long stretches it is funny to scream in a rather vicious to stupid way [...] ]. "

Christoph Petersen from Filmstarts.de suspects "that 'love without a health insurance certificate' would have been a better film if director David O. Russell had been allowed to finish it without interruptions."
