American Hustle ( German  American rip-off ) is an American film drama from David O. Russell from the year 2013 with Christian Bale and Amy Adams in the main roles , and Bradley Cooper , Jennifer Lawrence and Jeremy Renner in the supporting roles. The plot is loosely based on the FBI's Operation Abscam .

The premiere in Germany was February 7, 2014 as part of the 64th Berlinale . It was the only film nominated for the Big Five at the 2014 Academy Awards, as well as five other Academy Awards, but it did not receive any.

The con artist Irving Rosenfeld led a good life in the New York area in 1978 . He is not happy with his wife Rosalyn, but he cannot leave her because she threatens to deny him contact with his beloved adopted son Danny. Irving's lover Sydney Prosser helps him with the trickery by pretending to be the noble British "Edith Greensley" and faking contacts with British banks.

In a loan fraud , Sydney is caught by FBI agent Richie DiMaso, who is now forcing the two of them to work with him to arrest other criminals in order to obtain extenuating circumstances. Influential politicians, above all the mayor of the city of Camden , Carmine Polito, are to be proven corruptible. Polito plans to reinvigorate gambling in the state of New Jersey with the help of investment funds and thus create many jobs.

A meeting between Polito, Irving, DiMaso and the mobster Victor Tellegio, a subordinate of the notorious Mafia boss Meyer Lansky, is arranged using a fake sheikh who is supposedly looking for investment opportunities in the USA . Tellegio suspects fraud and demands a lot of money and the naturalization of the sheikh. Meanwhile, Irving's unpredictable and dissatisfied wife Rosalyn befriends mafioso Pete Musane and tells Irving's alleged entanglements.

With Carmine's help, Irving and DiMaso are able to prove that several high-ranking politicians have accepted bribes . DiMaso obsesses over Tellegio's arrest while Irving finds the whole scheme spiraling out of control. At a meeting with Tellegio's lawyer, the group - driven by DiMaso - transfers a large amount of money to Tellegio.

With the help of the collected evidence, the FBI can later arrest the corrupt politicians, including Polito. Irving regrets Polito's imminent arrest, however, as a friendship has developed between them and Irving is convinced of Polito's good intentions.

Irving and Sydney, however, only faked the meeting with Tellegio's attorney and the transfer. So you can now use the money or its repayment to the FBI as leverage to negotiate immunity for yourself and a reduced sentence for Polito. In addition, Irving achieves so that the Mafia boss Tellegio is exposed to no prosecution, which Irving ensures his survival. DiMaso's career has come to an end because of his incompetence.

Most recently, Irving and Sydney run a legal art gallery and live with Irving's son as a family. Rosalyn is now with Musane.

The movie American Hustle received mostly positive reviews. On the Web site Rotten Tomatoes , the film reached 93 percent of the reviewers a positive rating.

FAZ reviewer Bert Rebhandl wrote that the film "styled the seventies in proper style" and celebrated "a true festival of deceptions, fakes and acting mannerisms".
